Wylie, Frederick Arthur (1886-1954)

Frederick Arthur Wylie (sometimes called “Arthur Wylie” or “F.A. Wylie”) was an accountant and banker who lived at 1934 Barclay Street from 1919 to 1922.

Frederick Arthur Wylie was born in England about 1886. He arrived in Canada about 1906.

In the Bank of Commerce’s Annual Report for 1910, Arthur was the acting manager for the bank’s branch in Brooking, a southern Saskatchewan town that later became a ghost town.

By 1913, “F. A. Wylie” was a clerk with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

On August 5, 1916, in Winnipeg, Arthur married Emily Elisabeth Sherwood. She was born in Winnipeg on April 2, 1880. Her father was George Edward Sherwood (1850-1904), who was a Canadian Pacific Railway policeman in Winnipeg. Emily’s mother was Margaret Anne Dixon (1861-1939).

Arthur first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1917. He was a clerk with the superintendent’s department of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. He appeared at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Arthur worked with the Canadian Bank of Commerce through the early 1920s.

From 1927 to 1930, he was with the B.C. Fishing and Packing Company Limited.

In 1934, Arthur started his own investment securities company.

In 1937, Arthur became a bookkeeper with John Lyman Trumbull’s importing firm.

Also in 1937, Emily opened a business at 2207 West 41st Avenue called “The Tailored Woman,” which sold hand-made gloves and accessories.

From 1939 through the mid-1950s, Emily was the proprietor of The Wool Shop at 2148 West 41st Avenue.

After 1939, Arthur did not appear in the Vancouver directories.

After 1943, Emily lived at 2148 West 41st Avenue for several years.

Arthur died in London, England on June 7, 1954.

Emily died in Vancouver on May 15, 1963. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

It appears that Arthur and Emily did not have any children.
