Brooks, Philip Ranney (1875-1940)

Philip Ranney Brooks was a lumber executive who lived at 891 Chilco Street in 1912 and in 1914 and 1915. In 1916 and 1917, he was at 2033 Comox Street.

He was born on October 29, 1875, in Winona, Minnesota. His father was Lester Ranney Brooks (1847-1902), who was a successful lumberman in Minnesota; his mother was Josephine Bullen (1850-1944), who was from Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Philip attended Yale University. He later became secretary of the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company.

On February 12, 1907, in Chicago, Illinois, he married Caroline Lehman Sewall. She was born on January 12, 1884, in Stillwater, Minnesota. Her father was Edmund Devereaux Sewall; her mother was Anna Lehman. Caroline had attended Wells College in Aurora, New York, which was a women’s college from 1868 to 2004.

Philip was a member of the A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons).

In 1908, Philip was living in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He appeared at 891 Chilco Street in the Vancouver directories in 1912, 1914 and 1915.

In 1916 and 1917, he was at 2033 Comox Street. Also in 1917, he was associated with Brooks-Bidlake Cedar Company Ltd., whose offices were at 907-470 Granville Street. Robert Clarence Bidlake (1883-1953) was a timber merchant from North Dakota who later became a bond salesman.

In 1917, Philip registered with the United States military. He gave his permanent address as Bend, Oregon. His nearest relative was his wife, Mrs. P.R. Brooks, of 1563 Matthews Avenue in Vancouver.

From 1918 to 1920, he was at 1563 Matthews Avenue.

In the 1920s, Philip moved to Oregon, where he became the managing director of the Brooks Investment Corporation. He was also a major shareholder in the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company.

In 1928, he bought the Walter V. Smith house at 1943 Southwest Montgomery Drive in Portland, Oregon, and he continued to live there until 1940. (The 1930 and 1940 United States censuses said that Philip was living in Bend, Oregon, along with his mother.)

Sometime before 1930, Philip and Caroline were divorced.

Philip died in Portland, Oregon, on July 23, 1940. He was buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In Eugene, Oregon, the University of Oregon library created the Philip Ranney Brooks Memorial Room in Philip’s honour.

Josephine Brooks, Philip’s mother, died in Portland on May 3, 1944.

Large Group Attends Library Day Even’ Gifts Presented; Board of Directors Elected, Eugene Register-Guard, May 4, 1941, page 2, http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=l7NWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=l-gDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6562%2C6578302: “Eighty friends and patrons of the University of Oregon library were present Friday evening at the second annual dinner and business meeting of the Association held at the Osburn hotel with the highlight of the evening the presentation and acceptance of the new Philip Ranney Brooks Memorial room, which was visited after the dinner and where final ceremony of gift took place. . . . A letter of gift from Mrs. Lester Brooks of Portland, was read by her niece, Mrs. George C. Rice, of Klamath Falls, conveying to the University as a memorial to her son, the late Philip Ranney Brooks, the room just completed as an addition to the library, its contents including 1791 books, book cases, furniture, paintings, and the three-paneled doorway overlaid with a wrought iron tracery designed by Philip Brooks. Other furnishing will be placed later through Mrs. Brooks’ generosity. Rev. Raymond Walker, pastor of the First Congregational church, Portland, and a friend of the Brooks family, paid a tribute to the late Mr. Brooks, characterizing him as a lover of books, of nature, of beauty, of art, drama, a much travelled man, a true sportsman, and a devoted son to a charming mother, now 92 years of age, with whom he had made his home for a number of years in Portland. The unveiling of a portrait of Mr. Brooks, done recently by Sidney Bell, and placed Friday on the east wall of the new room, followed, with Mrs. Rice revealing the lifelike portrait which shows Mr. Brooks in military uniform.”
