Early Life
Harry Plummer McCool was born in Crawford, Pennsylvania on March 27, 1870. His parents were Jasper McCool (1842-1916) and Frances (“Fannie”) Hill Leslie (1844 1917).
In 1870 and 1880 he was with his parents in Pennsylvania.
He was in Kansas in 1885.
Harry Plummer McCool’s Legal Troubles
In the 1890s, there was a series of legal cases involving a man named Harry Plummer McCool, who was born about 1870. Although it is not certain that this is the same person who later lived in Vancouver, he was the same age and he had the same name. He went by a variety of names, including “H.P. McCool,” “Harry McCool,” “Plummer McCool,” “Plum McCool” and “Plumb McCool.”
One of the cases was in Kansas, where Harry and Frank Campbell were charged with disturbing the peace. Harry received a “city fine” of $25, which he appealed.
Harry also faced state criminal charges, which led to imprisonment for 45 days. He was also allowed to serve out the city fine in prison.
Before the end of his sentence, Harry escaped from the jail.
The local paper printed a poem that Harry wrote to describe his escape.
In the later 1890s, Harry was charged with stealing horses. The United States marshall tracked Harry and his companion for 200 miles before bringing the fugitives back to face charges.
The court convicted both Harry and his fellow horse thief.
Harry received a sentence of four and a half years.

Harry filed a series of unsuccessful appeals.
After Harry’s sentence was over, he received a pardon from the territorial governor.

Harry arrived in Canada about 1902.
On January 10, 1905, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he married Margaret Lawler. She was born in Admaston, near Renfrew, Ontario on April 28, 1878. Her parents were Patrick Lawler and Mary Shanlon. Father Cahill performed the wedding ceremony.
The 1906 Winnipeg directory described Harry as a painter.
In 1907 he was a porter.
In 1907, H. C. Mustoe successfully sued Harry for unpaid wages.
Time in Vancouver
Harry first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1909. He was living at 1968 Georgia Street, and he was the proprietor of the Stanley Park Inn.

Frances Catherine McCool was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 9, 1906.
On July 29, 1927, in Los Angeles, she married Herold Pittman Hare, who was a physician. He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on February 14, 1888. His parents were George Andrew Hare and Jessie Blanche Daniels.
In 1930 and 1940, Francis and Herold were living in Los Angeles.
Francis died in Los Angeles on December 19, 1944. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
Herold died in Los Angeles on February 11, 1964. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.
