Hugh Reid Tudhope was a business executive. He lived at 1931 Nelson Street in 1918.

Early Life

Hugh Reid Tudhope was born in Orillia, Ontario on January 9, 1876. His parents were William Tudhope (1831-1900) and Mary Reid (1838-1891).

In 1881 and 1891, Hugh was living with his parents in Orillia.

Marriage to Bertha

On December 15, 1900, in New York City, Hugh married Bertha Victoria Begg. She was born in Perth, Scotland, on March 17, 1876. Her parents were Alexander Begg (1825-1905) and Emily Maria Luke (1840-1932). Alexander Begg was a teacher, newspaperman, office holder, rancher, and historian who promoted settlement in western Canada. While living in Victoria, British Columbia during the 1890s, he used the title “C.C.” [Crofter Commissioner] to distinguish himself from another Alexander Begg who also lived in Victoria.

In the early 1900s, Hugh was associated with the family’s Tudhope Carriage Company, which built carriages and automobiles in Orillia. In 1909 a fire destroyed the Tudhope factory.

Toronto Globe, August 23, 1909, pages 1-2.

Toronto Globe, August 23, 1909, pages 1-2.

The company re-built the plant and carried on building automobiles, although competition from other manufacturers, especially Ford, often made business difficult.

When the First World War, began, the company stopped making automobiles and began making supplies for the war effort. After the war, the company did not start building automobiles again.

In 1914, Hugh went on a trip to Calgary and Edmonton. On the train trip back to Ontario, he was moving from one car to another when the train went over a rough portion of track. He was thrown off the train and onto the ground. At first his injuries seemed serious, but he recovered fairly quickly.

In 1915, Hugh and Bertha were living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They returned to Orillia in 1917.

According to some sources, Hugh was president of the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1917 and 1918. However, this appears to be Hilton Russell Tudhope, an investment dealer who was often known as “H.R. Tudhope.”

Time in Vancouver

In 1918 and perhaps 1919, Hugh and Bertha were in Vancouver, but only briefly. They lived at 1931 Nelson Street. Hugh was involved in building an electric smelting and steel plate mill in Vancouver.

On January 28, 1922, in Orillia, Hugh married Mary McLean. She was born in Orillia on December 19, 1887. Her parents were John McLean (1848–1930) and Euphemia McKerroll (1852–1939).

In the 1920s, Hugh and Mary went on a long trip to Great Britain and mainland Europe.

It appears that Hugh was an alderman on the Orillia town council in 1929. In 1933 and 1934 he was Orillia’s reeve (similar to the position of mayor in other municipalities).

In 1937 Hugh and Mary went on a Mediterranean cruise.
