Early Life

In 1851, Benjamin was living with his parents in Prendergast.

In 1861, he was a draper’s apprentice in St. Thomas, Pembrokeshire. (Drapers dealt in fabrics and “dry goods,” including textiles and ready-to-wear clothing.)

On March 22, 1869, Benjamin married Mary Ann (Marian) Evans. She was born in Haverfordwest about 1840. Her father was William Evans.

In 1871, Benjamin had a drapery and grocery business on High Street in Haverfordwest.

At the time of the 1881 England and Wales census, Benjamin was a merchant of butter and provisions.

In 1891, he was working as a grazier in Prendergast.

Benjamin was still the school-attendance officer in 1894, when he became one of the executors of the estate of William Lewis.

Sale of Property in Wales

In 1896, miners discovered gold in the Klondike Region of what was then the North-west Territories in Canada. (The Yukon Territory did not become a separate entity until 1898.)

In 1897, Benjamin and his son, Arthur Stanley White (often called “Stanley White”) prepared to sell their businesses and other property in Wales. They were planning to open a store near the goldfields in Canada.

In August 1897, an auctioneer advertised a sale of Benjamin’s furniture and real property.

To Vancouver

It appears that Benjamin and Stanley decided not to go to the Yukon. Instead, they opened a business in Vancouver to sell supplies to others who were planning to travel to the gold fields.

At first they had a store at 74 Cordova Street. In March 1898, they sold that business to Donaldson Trading Company.

Benjamin and Stanley opened a new store at 504 Westminster Avenue (later called “Main Street”). The name of the business was “Stanley White and Company.”

Benjamin: Return to Wales

In January 1904, the Vancouver Province reported that Benjamin was going home for a four-month vacation. He was stopping in New York City before sailing to the United Kingdom. (The article called him “S. White, senior” and said that he was going to England, rather than to Wales.)

Stanley became involved in a real estate transaction with Carl Francis Schader (1870–1934), who was a Santa Monica property developer. Stanley agreed to trade some real property in Seattle for Carl Schader’s Italian villa at 25 Seaside Terrace in Santa Monica. (The property is just south of the Santa Monica Pier.)
