Anne Batchelor was an artist and a Christian Science practitioner who lived at 1834 Barclay Street from 1920 to 1939.
Anne’s partner, Margaret Eveline Wake, was at 1834 Barclay Street from 1920 to 1930.
Family Background
Anne Batchelor was born on May 2, 1867, in Jacobstow, Cornwall, England.
Anne’s parents were Frederick Thomas Batchelor (1826-1897) and Charlotte Salusbury Trelawney (1829-1894).
Frederick Thomas Batchelor was born at St. George’s, Hanover Square, London on June 1, 1826. He was baptized on 26 Jun 1826.
Frederick Batchelor’s parents were Thomas Batchelor (1786-1868) and Anne Shaw (1793–1871). Thomas Batchelor spent many years in service with Britain’s royal household.
It is not certain who Thomas Batchelor’s ancestors were. One unconfirmed family rumour is that he was an illegitimate son of King George III and Amy “Batchelor” (possibly Lightfoot): Thomas Batchelor (abt. 1768 – abt. 1868); https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Batchelor-1440.
In 1819, Thomas Batchelor married Anne Shaw at St. George’s, Hanover Square, London.
In 1828, Thomas became the “Page of the Back Stairs” in Britain’s royal household. (The Page of the Backstairs is a head position within the Royal Households of the United Kingdom and is part of several groups of pages overseeing the male staff: Wikipedia article; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_of_the_Backstairs.)
In 1868, Queen Victoria heard that Thomas Batchelor was very ill, and she went to visit him. She wrote in her diary on June 17, 1868: “hear that good old Bachelor [sic], my former page, who I knew was very ill, was rapidly sinking so, tired as I was, was determined to go and see him. Drove at 5 with Alice to the door of his house, close behind the mews. Here we were received by the son, a clergyman, who took me upstairs alas! To find the faithful old servant of 50 years service, unconscious in the last death struggle, very painful to behold. I stroked his hand and went away sadly.” [Cited in Show your nice looking stamped covers! Any country; https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?gibf=17&t=414&start=2100. ]
In 1841, Frederick Batchelor was a student at Eton College. He later studied at Wadham College, Oxford. From 1854 to 1865, he was the rector at Calstock, Cornwall.
On February 6, 1855, in Calstock, Cornwall, Frederick married Charlotte Salusbury Trelawny. She was born in Calstock on April 18, 1829. Her parents were William Lewis Salusbury Trelawny (1781-1856) and Patience Christian Carpenter (1788-1857).
Sir William Lewis Salusbury Trelawny was the Eighth Baronet of Trelawny.
William Lewis Salusbury Trelawny died on November 15, 1856.
William Lewis Salusbury Trelawny’s will left £10,000 to Charlotte.
In 1865, Frederick Batchelor became the rector at Jacobstow.
Charlotte Batchelor died at Jacobstow on June 15, 1894.
Frederick Batchelor died on July 31, 1897.
Anne Batchelor: Early Life
Anne was living with her parents in Jacobstow in 1871.
In 1881, she was living with her aunt and uncle, Annie and George Gibbons, in Lanteglos by Camelford, Cornwall. Anne was a school student.
At the time of the 1891 England and Wales census, Anne was a visitor with Daniel and Margaret Browning in London, England.
By 1901, Anne was in the town of Bude, Cornwall, about 10 kilometres north of Jacobstow.
To Canada
In 1909, Anne sailed from Liverpool, England to Quebec City, Quebec, on her way to Vancouver. The immigration document described her as an artist. She arrived in Quebec on August 5, 1909.
After Anne arrived in Vancouver, she often appeared in local society announcements.
In the summer of 1910, Emily Carr, the well-known Canadian artist, was planning to travel to Europe. Anne Batchelor was to manage Emily’s studio.
In July 1910, Anne was planning to be away for a month, and she offered to rent her apartment while she was away.
Anne went to Chilliwack, British Columbia, where she spent about two weeks sketching in regions around Chilliwack. She stayed at the Minnehaha Hotel (sometimes known as the Vedder River Hotel: Chilliwack Progress, September 28, 2004, page 40).
She returned to Vancouver later in August 1910.
Anne first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. She was living at number 5, 1035 Granville Street.

Margaret Eveline Wake: Family Background
In 1911, Margaret Eveline Wake arrived in Vancouver. Margaret was a talented painter who had worked as an artist in England for many years.
Margaret Wake was born in Highgate, London on April 16 or 18, 1867. Her parents were Benjamin Barry Wake and Emily Ann Wake (1831-1906). (Benjamin sometimes used the name “Barry.”)
Benjamin and Emily were married in Manchester, England on April 8, 1857.
Margaret Wake was baptized on June 28, 1867.
Benjamin Wake was a ship and insurance broker. In 1895, he became bankrupt.
At the time of the 1901 England census, Benjamin described himself as a retired agent shipbroker.
Benjamin’s wife, Emily, died in 1906.
Benjamin died on November 13, 1909, and Margaret became the executor of Benjamin’s will.
Margaret Wake’s Life in England
Margaret was living with her parents from 1871 to 1901.
In 1881, she was a school student.
By the 1890s, she was an art student, and she began to exhibit her paintings at London art shows.
According to a note on the Museum of Vancouver’s website, Margaret studied with a Professor Heyermannosin (although the note is not sure of the spelling) (Margaret Wake, Canadian artist, 1867-1930; http://openmov.museumofvancouver.ca/object/history/pa-186.)
Perhaps Margaret’s painting teacher was Professor J. Heyerman, who was an art instructor in London in the mid-1890s.
In 1899 and 1900, Margaret was an art student at Bedford College in London.
At some point, Margaret also studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.
The 1901 England census described Margaret as an artist.
In 1910, Margaret was living at 35 Maple Street in the Saint Pancras region of London.
To Vancouver
Margaret sailed from Liverpool, England to Quebec City, Quebec on May 11, 1911. She arrived at Quebec on May 22. Her final destination was Vancouver.
By June 1911, Margaret was offering oil and water colour lessons at the Studio Club, which was in room 17 of the Hadden Block, 633 West Hastings Street. (Although the name of the building sometimes appears as “Haddon Block,” it was named after an English property developer named Harvey Hadden (1851-1931).)
The Studio Club had started in 1904 to promote local amateur artists. It was a successor to the Vancouver Arts & Crafts Association (see Vancouver Arts & Crafts Association; https://vanasitwas.wordpress.com/2016/04/23/vancouver-arts-crafts-association/).
Margaret first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1912. She was a teacher at the Studio Club, and she lived in the Cedar Cottage region of Vancouver.
Margaret lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.
1912 | Cedar Cottage |
1913 | Number 6, 950 Bidwell Street (Cambridge Apartments) |
1914 | Number 5, 645 Bute Street (Stadacona Apartments) |
1915 to 1919 | Number 7, 1019 Bute Street (Mayfair Apartments) |
1920 to 1930 | 1834 Barclay Street |
She began to show her artwork at local art exhibits, and she also appeared at local literary events.
In June 1913, Margaret and Anne were two of several artists who displayed their work at a local exhibition.
Anne and Margaret
By 1913, Anne and Margaret had begun living together.
At first they were at the Cambridge Apartments at 950 Bidwell Street.
In 1913, they were at the Stadacona Apartments, 601 Bute Street. (Sometimes the building’s address appeared as “645 Bute Street.”)
The 1914 Vancouver society directory listed Anne (but not Margaret) at 601 Bute Street.
From about 1916 to 1920, Anne and Margaret were at number 7, 1019 Bute Street.
During this period, Anne and Margaret organized the Sketch Club in Vancouver. The club held its first exhibition on May 6, 1916.
In 1917, the Sketch Club moved to the Victoria Block, at 342 West Pender Street.
In 1920, Anne moved to 1834 Barclay Street. A society page notice said that Margaret was planning to reside with Anne during the summer months.
In 1920 and 1925, Anne made additions and repairs to the property at 1834 Barclay Street.

One of the improvements may have been alterations to a building at the rear of the property, which served as Margaret’s studio.
In July 1920, an article in the Vancouver Province’s society column described Anne’s and Margaret’s association with the Sketch Club.
Anne and Margaret regularly appeared together in Vancouver society notices.
In the 1920s, they often went to Savary Island during the summer.
In the mid-1920s, Margaret made a series of portraits of “picturesque characters” in the Vancouver area. The subject of one portrait was Charles Quick (also known as “Dad” Quick).
Dad Quick had arrived in Vancouver about 1911, and he operated a saddle-making business at 1549 Powell Street. He claimed that he was born in 1821 and that he had helped Elias Howe to produce early sewing machines in the 1840s. Further investigations revealed that Charles was actually born in 1835, and that many of his stories about his life may not have been accurate.
Dad Quick died in Vancouver on May 10, 1932.
Anne later donated the portrait of Dad Quick to the Museum of Vancouver. There are some differences between the painting in the newspaper article (above), and the museum’s painting (below). The newspaper version appears to be unfinished: it does not have a hat, and the clothing appears to be somewhat different.
In 1926, Margaret joined the newly-formed Palette and Chisel Club. She was one of the artists who displayed their works at the club’s first exhibition in the fall of 1926.
Margaret continued to exhibit her paintings until the late 1920s.
In 1929, Anne travelled to England with her niece, Ruth Henderson.
Anne returned to Canada on June 28, 1929.
Ruth Henderson returned from Europe in November 1929.
By the summer of 1930, Margaret had become very ill.
Margaret died in Burnaby, British Columbia on October 13, 1930.
Anne continued to live at 1834 Barclay Street until 1939.
From 1940 to 1943, she was at 1966 Haro Street. This large house was the former home of David Henry Wilson at the southeast corner of Haro Street and Chilco Street. From 1930 to 1945, Sara Andrews (“Dolly”) Dewar operated the house as a respectable boarding house.
From 1944 to 1957, Anne was at 2744 West 10th Avenue.
Later she lived at 7190 Granville Street.
She never married.
She died in Vancouver on April 1, 1963.
One of Anne’s sisters, Charlotte Lewinna Batchelor (1870-1960), married Stanley McNab Henderson, who lived at 901 Chilco Street in 1919 and 1920.
Another sister, Elizabeth Laetitia Batchelor (1865-1933), married Harry Templer Widdicombe, who was at 954 (or 958) Denman Street in 1900.

The review includes the following comments on several British Columbia artists: “If one is grateful for the introduction to Richardson, Phillips and Collings, none of whom are exactly household words in Canadian art history, one wishes that other painters had been left to moulder in the front parlours of Victoria. Maude Lettice, Statira Frame and Margaret Wake are not minor characters in Lady Windermere’s Fan, but genteel daubers of such appalling banality that an Easterner is forced to relegate them to the only-a-British-Columbian could-love category.”

“Dad” Quick Was Not a Centenarian After All: His Age Was One of the “Polite Fictions” of City. , Official Somerset Records Show That He Was Really 97, Vancouver Province, May 10, 1932, page 1, column 6.
One of the “polite fictions” of recent years in Vancouver has been the age of “Dad” Quick. The old man claimed to be in his 112th year, and while there has been a certain amount of skepticism, Vancouver was inclined to take the veteran saddler’s word and accorded him annual honors after he passed his so-called hundredth birthday.
However, in the interests of accuracy it may now be revealed that Quick was only in his 97th year. He was a native of Wilton, near Taunton, Somersetshire, England, and was born in 1835. It was not Vancouver which threw the spotlight on the age of the old gentleman, but his own people of Somersetshire.
Clippings from The Province relating his birthday party at the age of 110 and 111 found their way to the Old Country. Somerset folk began to talk with pride of their splendid old son overseas. But then, historians began to dig into parish records and “debunked” the story.
WAS BORN IN 1835.
The registers of Wilton show that James Quick and Elizabeth Summerhays were married at Wilton Church on March 13, 1827, and had a daughter, Eliza, baptized on January 27, 1828. Five sons followed: David, baptized December 9, 1828; James, November 27, 1831; George, December 1, 1833 (burled December 25, 1834); Charles (“Dad”), November 15, 1835; Henry, May 28, 1837 (died July 4, 1837). “Dad” Quick was therefore fifteen years younger than he claimed.”

Interested to know if anyone can determine the origins of the Batchelor family.
I suppose it depends on whether you are looking for just general information on the name origin, or if you are looking for specific ancestors. You may be a genealogist yourself, but if you aren’t (as I am not), then there may be someone who has already specialized in studying this family.
The normal method, of course, is to start with what you know (or can reasonably assume) and then work through the connections that turn up (although some of these alleged connections may be questionable or inaccurate in various degrees).
This page has some information on the origins of the Batchelor surname: http://forebears.io/surnames/batchelor#meaning. However, it won’t tell you how accurate its sources are, or if this specific Batchelor family has any connection to any of the sources.
For this specific Batchelor family, the father is Frederick Thomas Batchelor, who was a rector at Jacobstow in Cornwall. He was born about 1827. He studied at Wadham College in Oxford.
According to the Reading Mercury, Oxford Gazette, Newbury Herald and Berks County Paper, (Reading, England), Saturday, December 27, 1851; page 2: Frederick Thomas Batchelor, B.A., Wadham College, Oxford, was admitted into holy orders in 1851.
This obituary notice refers to Frederick’s wife, Charlotte: The Royal Cornwall Gazette Falmouth Packet, Cornish Weekly News, & General Advertiser (Truro, England), Thursday, June 21, 1894; page 5: “Batchelor– At Jacobstow Rectory, North Cornwall, June 15, Charlotte, wife of the Rev. Frederick Thomas Batchelor, rector of Jacobstow, aged 65, — a daughter of the late Sir William L.S. Trelawney, Bart., of Trelawne, Cornwall, formerly Lord-Lieutenant of this county.”
Debrett’s Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, 1878, pages 468-469, refers to Frederick Thomas Batchelor’s marriage to Charlotte. She was a member of the Salusbury-Trelawny family: https://books.google.ca/books?id=RQ82AQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA469#v=onepage&q&f=false.
This marriage index document at FamilySearch includes Frederick Thomas Batchelor’s father: Thomas Batchelor: “England Marriages, 1538–1973 ,” database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NFZH-S9R : accessed 25 September 2015), Frederick Thomas Batchelor and Charlotte Salusbury Trelawny, 06 Feb 1855; citing Calstock, Cornwall, England, reference p 184; FHL microfilm 1,545,380.
The 1881 England and Wales census says that Frederick T. Batchelor was born at St Georgia [which appears to be a transcription error for St. George’s: see below], Middlesex, England, about 1827: “England and Wales Census, 1881,” database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X35D-482 : accessed 25 September 2015), Frederick T Batchelor, Jacobstow, Cornwall, England; from “1881 England, Scotland and Wales census,” database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing p. 7, PRO RG 11/2271 / 44, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey; FHL microfilm 1,341,545.
More details for Frederick appear in The registers of Wadham College, Oxford, part 2, 1889, page 426; https://archive.org/stream/registersofwadha02wadhiala#page/426/mode/1up: “Frederick Thomas Batchelor. Eldest son of Thomas Batchelor, Esq. Born in St. George’s Hanover Square, aged 18. Admitted C. 22 Jan. 1845. B.C. 23 Nov. 1847. M.A. 17 Dec. 1852. C.M. account closed Lady Day 1857. Educated at Eton. Rector of Calstock, Corn., 1854 to 1865. Rector of Jacobstow, Corn., 1865.”
The 1841 census for England and Wales appears to show Frederick Thomas Batchelor at Eton: “England and Wales Census, 1841,” database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7QG-S86 : accessed 25 September 2015), Frederic Thomas Batchelor in household of Francis Hodgson, Eton, Buckinghamshire, England; from “1841 England, Scotland and Wales census,” database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO HO 107, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey.
This death index appears to refer to the same Frederick Thomas Batchelor: “England and Wales Death Registration Index 1837-2007,” database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2JYH-FPD : accessed 25 September 2015), Frederick Thomas Batchelor, 1897; from “England & Wales Deaths, 1837-2006,” database, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : 2012); citing Death, Stratton, Cornwall, England, General Register Office, Southport, England.
This page includes a list of Frederick Thomas Batchelor’s descendants: People of Cornish origin connected to BC, Canada; https://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/trees/108061/I1937/-/individual. However, it doesn’t refer to any ancestors on the Batchelor side of the family.
So that is what has turned up so far.
Best of luck in your search for further information.

Ann Batchelor had a life-partner, Margaret Wake. (Tippet, Emily Carr, 102).
