Caldwell, Sarah L. and Miss M.S. Caldwell (1854-1940)

Caldwell, Sarah L. and Miss M.S. Caldwell

According to the Vancouver directories, Sarah L. Caldwell and Miss M.S. Caldwell were nurses.

Sarah lived at 1842 Alberni Street from 1908 to 1910.

Miss M.S. Caldwell lived at 1842 Alberni Street from 1910 to 1912 and from 1914 to 1916.

Sarah Caldwell

It appears that Sarah Caldwell was the widow of John Caldwell.

Sarah’s Early Life

Sarah Caldwell was born Sarah McKiernan in 1823 in County Longford, Ireland.

She married John Caldwell, who was in the linen business in Ireland. John died in Ireland, and Sarah moved with her family to Scotland.

After a short time in Scotland, Sarah’s sons, William and Henry, tried to emigrate to Australia. After the Australian officials said that William and Henry were too young to obtain land in Australia, they decided to go to Canada.

To Canada

About 1882, William and Henry arrived in Montreal. They worked with contractors who were building the Canadian Pacific Railway. Later they began living on Salt Spring Island, which is between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland.

It appears that Sarah immigrated to Canada about 1886 or 1887.

In 1891, she was widowed and living on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, along with her son, Henry, and his wife, Anna.

In 1901, Sarah was living on Salt Spring Island with her son, William.

A person named Sarah Caldwell lived at 1842 Alberni Street from 1908 to 1910. (It is possible, though it is not certain, that this is the same person who was on Salt Spring Island.)

In 1911, Sarah was on Salt Spring Island, along with her son, William.

Sarah died on September 14, 1912 at Walker’s Hook on Salt Spring Island.

Margaret St. Claire Caldwell

Miss M.S. Caldwell appears to be Margaret St. Claire Caldwell (who was sometimes called “Marjorie”).

Margaret was born about 1854 in Ireland.

She did not marry.

She died on June 10, 1940, at Ganges, Salt Spring Island and she was buried at Oak Spring Farm.
