Albert Ernest Austin was a real estate, insurance and financial agent, and a notary public. He lived at 1821 Haro Street from 1910 to 1915, and at 847 Denman Street from 1916 to 1931.

He was born on August 28, 1878, near Margate, Kent, England. His father was Edmond Edward Austin; his mother was Annie Sarah Burns.

He was educated in public schools in England, and was employed as a clerk in England.

He came to Canada in 1901, and established himself in business in Vancouver by 1902. For about three years he lived in a series of houses in or near downtown Vancouver, while working as a bookkeeper for Colin Fred Jackson and Co. [For more information on Colin Fred Jackson (also called C.F. Jackson), see Alexander Kidd Evans.]

In 1906, Albert was the manager of the Crown Life Insurance Company at 310 West Hastings Street.

By 1907, he had formed a real estate brokerage business with Rowan Mcdonald Latimer (about 1862-1912).

On September 1, 1907, in Vancouver, Albert married Margaret Turner Rowan. She was born on November 23, 1878 in Kincardine, Ontario. Her father was James Rowan; her mother was Bessie Turner. Albert and Margaret had at least three children: Ernest Rowan Austin, Edward Ellis Austin and Dorothy Bernice Austin.

In 1909, Albert established his own business, called A.E. Austin & Company.

From 1910 to 1915, he lived at 1821 Haro Street. About 1916, he moved to 847 Denman Street, where he lived for the rest of his time in Vancouver.

In 1916 and 1917, he was the president of the Vancouver Stock Exchange, but he later sold his seat on the exchange.

Throughout the period after the First World War and through the 1920s, he continued to operate his real estate business.

He was a member of the Vancouver Riding and Driving Club and the Vancouver Polo Club. He also belonged to the Terminal City Club, as well as the Mount Hermon Lodge of the  A.F. & A.M. [Ancient Free & Accepted Masonry: http://freemasonry.bcy.ca/texts/afandam.html] and the Sons of England.

On February 14, 1927, Albert’s wife, Margaret, died in Vancouver. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On September 1, 1928, in Vancouver, Albert married Dorothy Frances Morgan. Dorothy was born on November 3, 1885, in Femington, Devon, England. Her father was Devereux Doria de Bretigny; her mother was Emmeline Kenmure Morris. (Dorothy was a sister of Devereux Falkiner Pallavicini Doria de Bretigny, who married Gwendolyn Kentish Rankin in 1911.) Dorothy had been married before (in 1915) to Ernest Stephen Morgan. Ernest was born on August 7, 1883, at Station House, Bicester. He died in Monrovia, California, on March 23, 1925. Ernest and Dorothy had two daughters. One daughter was Marion Morgan, who died in 1918. The other daughter was Ernle Dorothy Morgan.

In the late 1920s, Albert continued his interest in real estate. In 1929, he was involved in a dispute with the City of Vancouver over the value of a strip of English Bay foreshore lots between Bidwell Street and Nicola Street. The city was assembling the lots as part of the city’s park system. Albert was asking more than double the assessed value of the lot that he owned. (It is not clear what became of Albert’s price request; the city did end up assembling the foreshore property for park purposes.)

On the morning of October 22, 1931, Albert went to a dentist’s office on the top floor of the 15-storey Medical-Dental Building at 925 West Georgia Street. He felt unwell, and opened the door to the fire escape to get some fresh air. He apparently lost his balance and fell to the ground. He was taken to the Vancouver General Hospital, where he remained alive for three hours but he ultimately died. The Vancouver coroner, Doctor William Disbrow Brydone-Jack, held an inquest, which concluded that Albert’s death was an accident. Albert was buried in Mountain View Cemetery.

Dorothy continued to live in Vancouver; she died on February 23, 1983.

Albert and Margaret Turner Rowan had the following children.

Ernest Rowan Austin

Ernest Rowan Austin was born in Vancouver on May 20, 1909.

Isobel died in Vancouver on June 6, 2005.

Ernest’s second marriage was to Audrey Isabel Stephenson.

Ernest died in Delta, British Columbia on March 4, 1990.

Audrey died in Delta on November 5, 2001.
