Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona; June 18, 1971, page 28: WASHINGTON (UPI) -The Justice Department yesterday asked landlords near Williams AFB and military bases in six other states to end discrimination in renting housing to servicemen. The installations were listed as experiencing racial discrimination in off-base housing. Referring to all seven states, Atty. Gen. John N. Mitchell said the facilities involved 1,121 houses, apartments and trailer parks in Arizona, California, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, North Carolina and Utah. These units have been placed off limits by the Defense Department because the owners have refused to sign non-discrimination agreements. The Justice Department said that the owners could be sued if they do not sign a pledge. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 makes it unlawful to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion or national origination in selling or renting a dwelling, the department said. Williams’ housing referral officer, Warrant Officer Walter J. Kupersmith, said, “So far as I am concerned the problem is absolutely minimal. Other facilities mentioned by the Justice Department were Port Hueneme Naval base and Norton AFB, Calif.; Homestead AFB and Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Fla.; Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.; Nellis AFB, Nev.; Fort Bragg, N.C.; and Hill AB, Utah.”
