Greer, Thomas Wesley (1873-1964)

Thomas Wesley Greer was the general manager of the Pacific Coast Fire Insurance Company’s office in Vancouver. He lived at 1967 Barclay Street from 1917 to 1919.

Thomas Wesley Greer (sometimes called “Wesley Greer” or “T. Wesley Greer”) was born on February 14, 1873, in Lindsay, Ontario. His father was Joseph M. Greer (born about 1829), who was a farmer. Thomas’s mother was Sarah Ann Fair (born about 1839).

In 1891, Thomas was living in Lindsay, Ontario, with his father, along with his sister, Maria Thurston.

In 1901, he was still living in Lindsay, along with his sister, Maria. He was an insurance agent.

On October 27, 1910, in Toronto, Ontario, Thomas married Mary Elizabeth Stewart. She was born on October 21, 1879 (or 1880), in Bright, Oxford County, Ontario. Her parents were James and Mary Stewart.

Thomas first appeared in Vancouver in the 1911 Canada census. He was a fire insurance agent. He and Mary were living in the then-new English Bay Mansions at 1306 Bidwell Street.

Thomas continued to be associated with the Pacific Coast Fire Insurance Company until about 1942.

Thomas retired about 1943. In March 1943, he and Mary were travelling in eastern North America.

Mary died in Vancouver on May 25, 1945.

Thomas died in Vancouver on May 7, 1964.

Joseph Stewart Greer

Joseph Stewart Greer was born in Vancouver about 1912.

He married Mary Florence Helm, who was born on April 29, 1920, in Port Hope, Ontario. Her father was Walter John Helm. Her mother was Florence Forrest.

In 1955, Joseph was the president of Greer Brothers Agencies Ltd., an insurance brokerage firm.

Mary died in Vancouver on September 13, 1990.

 

James Wesley Greer

James Wesley Greer was born in Vancouver about 1915.

In 1955, he was the secretary-treasurer of Greer Brothers Agencies Ltd.

“Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Greer, wife of T. Wesley Greer, 1790 West Thirty-eighth, died at her residence Friday after an illness of five months.

She was born in the village of Bright, Oxford County, Ontario, and as a young girl moved with her family to Toronto. She came to Vancouver with her husband in 1911.

For many years Mrs. Greer was actively associated with the Thomas Crosby Circle of St. Andrew’s-Wesley Church and did much work with the Women’s Auxliliary of the Vancouver Genral Hospital.

She was a member of the Georgian Club, Women’s Canadian Club, the Musical Club and the University Chapter of the IODE. In those organizations she was held in high esteem for her self-sacrificing work for community efforts.

Besides her husband she leaves two sons, Joseph Stewart, at home, and James Wesley, overseas with the RCAF. She had three sisters, Mrs. W.C. Moore of Barkerville, who has been here for several months; the Misses Edna and Jessie Stewart of Toronto, and a brother, Molby Stewart, of Vancouver. Her nephew, Wesley J. Thurston, of Stratford, Ont., is visiting in Vancouver.

Rev. Dr. O.W.S. McCall will conduct the funeral service at 2 o’clock from Center & Hanna’s parlors. Interment will be at Ocean View Burial Park. The pallbearers will be C.T. McHattie, F.J. Lyn, Dr. G.H. Worthington, Roy W. Brown, Frank R. Begg and F.G. Evans.”
