Beatrice A. Levy was a journalist and magazine publisher. She also operated a stationery and confectionery store at 1182 Denman Street in 1912.

 

Family Background

Beatrice Levy was born in Montreal, Quebec, on December 27, 1890. Her parents were Louis Levy (about 1859-1918) and Bella Rebecca Macks (1864-1932).

The Levy family were Jewish immigrants from east-central Europe. Some records say that they had lived in Poland; others records refer to Russia.

In the late 1880s, the Levy family was in Montreal. By about 1900, they were in Rossland, British Columbia. Louis Levy was a tobacconist.

Louis Levy and other members of the Levy family first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. Louis had a wholesale tobacco business at 408 West Cordova Street, and the family lived at 1144 Pendrell Street.

Louis Levy died in 1918.

Beatrice Levy in Vancouver

Shortly after Beatrice’s arrival in Vancouver, she started a magazine called “The Collector’s Companion.”

She also started another magazine called “The Levy Magazine.”

Beatrice actively promoted her business, and she appeared in Canadian and American Who’s Who publications.

Beatrice did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1913.

She did not marry.

It appears that she became ill. By 1921 she was living in an institution.

She died in Essondale, British Columbia on September 11, 1942. She was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.
