John Lee Cox was born in Cheam, Surrey, England on May 31, 1866. His parents were James Cox (1846-1924) and Sarah Lee (1838-1912). James and Sarah were married on March 12, 1866 in Norbiton, near Kingston upon Thames, Surrey. (A newspaper from 1912 gives a marriage date of September 16, 1865: see below.)

The deadliest tornado in United States history struck Murphysboro and several nearby locations on March 18, 1925. (It was known as the Tri-State Tornado: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-State_Tornado.) The tornado destroyed about 40 percent of the town. Fires that broke out afterwards caused even more damage.

 

John’s Early Life and First Marriage

John travelled with his parents to the United States in 1882.

On October 12, 1892, in Macoupin County, Illinois, he married Julia Ann Hilyard (sometimes spelled Hilliard). She was born in Hillyard Township, Illinois on January 27, 1873. Her parents were Samuel Hilyard (1832–1896) and Susan Sabrine D. Rexford (1848–1930).

Julia died on May 13, 1897 (although some sources say May 3). She was buried in Hilyard Cemetery, Royal Lake, Macoupin County, Illinois.

Second Marriage

On November 16, 1899 in Madison, Illinois, John married Millicent Candler. She was born in Illinois on September 24, 1877. Her parents were Robert Holiday Candler (1853–1912) and Susan Pratt (1857–1934).

In 1900, John and Millicent were living in St. Louis, Missouri, along with John’s daughter and son. John’s parents were also living with them. John was a bridge contractor.

The Coxes spent most of their time in Vancouver, although they were away from the city in 1920 and 1921. At the time of the 1921 Canada census, they were living on Bryan Avenue in Woodrow Village, near Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

While they were in Vancouver, John worked as a concrete worker and construction foreman from the 1920s until he retired about 1936.

John died in Vancouver on June 11, 1947. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Edna Leona Cox

Edna Leona Cox was born in Plainview, Illinois on November 6, 1894.

On November 27, 1917, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she married Levi Houghton Verge. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 6, 1888. (He was sometimes called “Leigh.” One source called him “Lester.”)

Levi later worked as a logger. On July 27, 1920, he died by drowning at Green Lake, near Squamish, British Columbia. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On July 12, 1922, in Golden, British Columbia, Edna married Robert Edgar Weston, who was a farmer. He was born in Manchester, England on July 1, 1888. His parents were John Thomas Weston (1855-1936) and Emma Jane Highway (1863-1942).

Edna and Robert lived in McMurdo, a community about 15 miles south of Golden.

Samuel James Cox was born on October 27, 1898 in Murphysboro, Illinois. (He was sometimes called “James” or “Jamie.”)

During the First World War, he enlisted with the United States Army.
