Buckland, Charles Channing (1873-1936)

Charles Channing Buckland was a farmer. He lived at 1059 Chilco Street from 1920 to 1923.

He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on September 28, 1873. His father was William Francis Buckland (1847-1915), a lawyer, a Member of Parliament in New Zealand, and the mayor of Cambridge, New Zealand. Charles’s mother was Elizabeth Jane Shipherd (1850-1910).

Charles went to the University of New Zealand. In 1898, he moved to Cambridge, New Zealand, where he worked with his father. Charles was called to the bar in 1904.

About 1906, Charles spent some time travelling in British Columbia. On September 18, 1907, in Vancouver, Charles married Gertrude Nellie Wilshire. She was born on January 2, 1881, in Sydney, Australia. Her father was Alfred Theodore Wilshire; her mother was Marianne Lomas Wilshire.

In 1909, Charles’s mother became ill. Charles went back to Cambridge, although he did not resume his law practice. Charles’s father retired in 1910, and began spending his time at Monavale, the family farm. About 1911, Charles’s mother died.

Charles applied for a commission in the New Zealand Army Motor Reserve. On May 31, 1913, he became a lieutenant in the motor reserve. On January 18, 1915, he was promoted from lieutenant to captain. The promotion request said that Lieutenant Buckland was “a reliable and enthusiastic officer who has done a good deal of work in his district, and has made himself the officer to be called on or referred to concerning his district.”

Charles’s father died in 1915.

On July 28, 1919, Charles resigned his commission in the New Zealand Forces Motor Service Corps.

By 1920, Charles had arrived in Vancouver, where he moved to 1059 Chilco Street. He described himself as a farmer.

By 1924, he was the president of Vancouver Milling and Grain Company, Ltd., and was living at 1650 Haro Street. (James Edward Hall, who was the general manager of the company, lived at 1963 Comox Street in the early 1920s; Mr. Hall was married to Ethelwyn Ceperley, a daughter of Henry Tracey Ceperley.)

By 1925, Charles was the manager of North West Building, whose offices were at 509 Richards Street. He was living at 1063 Balfour Avenue in Shaughnessy Heights.

Later he moved to a home called “Wildwood” on North Road in Burquitlam, British Columbia, where he took up farming.

Charles died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on July 9, 1936. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
