Coombes, Spencer Richard (1879-1954)

Spencer Richard Coombes was a marine gasoline engineer. He lived at 1822 Pendrell Street in 1917 and 1918, and at 1993 Beach Avenue from 1919 to 1921. (He sometimes used Spencer as his first name, and sometimes used Richard. In this short biography, he is called Spencer.)

Spencer was born on December 5, 1879, in Himley, Staffordshire, England. His father was Arthur Coombes, who was born about 1851 in Mapledurham, Oxfordshire. Arthur was a botanist and gardener, who spent some time at Himley Hall, near Dudley in Staffordshire.

Richard’s mother was Alma Florence Young, who was born about 1856 in Worcester, England. Arthur and Alma were married in Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1878.

In 1901 and 1911, Spencer was living with his parents in Hagley, Worcestershire.

Spencer had arrived in Vancouver by late 1916. On September 20, 1916, in Vancouver, he married Mabel Rose Wheeler. Mabel was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England on July 6, 1887. Her father was Henry Wheeler, who was a harness maker. Mabel’s mother was Elizabeth Carpenter.

Mabel had first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1913. She worked for Gordon Drysdale Limited as a silk mercer’s clerk. In 1915 and 1916, she was residing at Frederick Clifford Yarrall’s home at 1836 Alberni Street.

After their marriage, Spencer and Mabel lived at 1822 Pendrell Street from 1917 to 1918. From 1919 to 1921, they were at 1993 Beach Avenue.

In 1919, Mabel and her sister, Constance Wheeler, went on four-month trip to England.

From 1922 to 1926, Spencer and Mabel lived at 1744 Davie Street.

In 1923, Spencer and Mabel went on a trip to Oakland, California.

By 1927, they had moved to Spencer 4183 West 11th Avenue, where they continued to live until the 1950s.

In 1930, Spencer was an engineering superintendent at Celtic Shipyards. In 1940 and 1950, he was working at Western Machine Works.

Spencer died in Vancouver on September 20, 1952. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Mabel died in Vancouver on August 20, 1982. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Spencer and Mabel had a daughter.

Dorothy N. Coombes

Sometime before 1954, Dorothy Coombes married Herbert Edward Stacey, who worked for Seaboard Lumber. He was born in Vancouver on May 23, 1915. His father was George Welles Stacey. His mother was Sarah Grace Stickle. This marriage ended in divorce. Herbert died in Vancouver on June 15, 1970.

In the early 1970s, Dorothy married Ian Henry Muirhead McCloy, who was an insurance adjuster. He was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, on April 28, 1917. His parents were William McCloy and Mary Jane Ayling. Ian had earlier been married to Patricia Melvina White (1921-1968).

Ian died in Vancouver on November 11, 2003.
