William Henry Shain was a confectionery shipper and supervisor. He lived at 1860 Barclay Street from 1907 to 1918.

 

Family Background

William Henry Shain was born in Charlotteville, Norfolk, Ontario on August 13, 1873. His father was Edway Ryerson Shain (1837–1923), who was a laborer and farmer.

In 1901, Edway was an employee of the Imperial Syrup Company. (His son, William, was the manager of the company.)

Edway died in Vancouver on August 16, 1923.

Marriage to Mildred

On February 7, 1899, in Victoria, British Columbia, William married Mildred Anna Small. She was born on April 15, 1874, in Brownville, Nebraska. Her parents were William Small (1837-1897) and Charlotte Conner (born about 1843 in Ohio; buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Brownville, Nebraska).

William Small owned a general store and also operated a lumber business in Brownville.

Life in Vancouver

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1900. He was a foreman with the Imperial Syrup Company, and he was living at 870 Princess Street.

About 1903, William began working with the wholesale confectionery firm of Ramsey Brothers. He continued with Ramsey Brothers until about 1916 (and perhaps later, although the 1918 directory described him as a travelling salesman).

William and Mildred were active members of the Canadian Order of Woodmen of the World, a fraternal and philanthropic society with headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska.

In February 1915, William, Mildred and their son, Maurice, travelled to California and then to the Panama Canal.

In the summer of 1915, William was part of the organizing committee for a Ramsey Brothers summer picnic.

Move to Washington State

On March 1, 1919, the Shains moved to the United States. In 1920 they were living in Issaquah, east of Seattle, Washington. William was a poultry man.

In 1922 he was also selling gasoline-powered lamps and lanterns.

In 1923, William applied to become a naturalized citizen of the United States.

William and Mildred continued to live in Washington through the 1930s and 1940s. The 1930 and 1940 United States censuses described William as a poultry farmer.

Mildred died at Issaquah on February 21, 1951.

William died at Renton, Washington, on April 4, 1954.

William and Mildred had a son.

 

Maurice Gerald Shain

Maurice Gerald Shain was born in Vancouver on September 21, 1899. (He was often called “Mike.”)

He served with Britain’s Royal Air Force during the First World War.

On September 3, 1930, in Bellingham, Washington, he married Rena E. Eddy. (She was born Serena Edna Walters on November 30, 1902. In 1921 she married Willard W Eddy. It appears that this marriage ended in divorce.)

In 1933, Maurice and Rena were living in Seattle, Washington.

For a time he worked in the mining and fishing industries in Alaska.

After the Second World War, he was with the War Assets Administration.

In 1950, Maurice and Rena moved to Issaquah, Washington, where Maurice was a realtor until 1953.

On August 1, 1953, they bought the Shamrock Café on Front Street, which became famous for Rena’s pies and cakes.
