Claude Reginald Porpa

Claude Reginald Porpa was born in Middlesex, England about 1856. His father was Giovanni Porpa.

Giovanni Porpa

Giovanni Dominica Porpa was a tailor. (His full name was “Giovanni Giuseppe Francesco Saverio Domenico Porpa.”) He was born in Naples, Italy, on May 18, 1823. His father was Salvatore Porpa. His mother was Fortunata Venditto.

Giovanni immigrated to England and became a naturalized English citizen. He lived on Upper John Street, near Golden Square in Saint James Westminster.

In 1848, Giovanni married Ann Gordon (née Murdoch). She was born in London about 1801. She had been married before, to Allen Gordon, who appears to have died in 1841.

In 1852, Giovanni published a notice that he would not be liable for Ann’s debts.

The Morning Chronicle (London, England), issue 26686, July 6, 1852, page 1
The Morning Chronicle (London, England), issue 26686, July 6, 1852, page 1

In 1853, Giovanni sued Ann and two of her children in the family court. (The outcome of this case is not available; there may have been a judicial separation or divorce. Ann died in Islington, London, in 1879.)

By 1861, Giovanni was living in the St. Martins-in-the-Fields area of London. According to the 1861 English census, he was married to “Rosel Rose Porpa,” who was born in Middlesex about 1834. Two children were living with them: Lucretia, age 8, and Claude, age 5. In 1881, Rosa Porpa was living in Lambeth, London. She was born about 1836 in Poole, Dorset, England. Therefore, Rose (born around 1834 to 1836) may have been Claude’s mother.

Giovanni was involved several legal proceedings. In 1852 he sued the brother of one of his customers. The customer had died at sea without paying Giovanni’s account. The court held that the brother was not liable for the debt.

In 1859, Giovanni sued another customer for failing to pay his bill. The customer arranged to meet Giovanni at Bloomsbury Square. Giovanni went to the square, but instead of meeting the customer, he was attacked by two men. The jury ended up convicting one of the men, who received a sentence of ten days in prison and a fine of £20.

In 1860, Giovanni petitioned the House of Lords to ask the British Crown and Parliament to intervene in a case in Italy. Giovanni said that his wealthy uncle in Naples had been persuaded to make a will giving his money to the church. Giovanni said that the will was a forgery. The House of Lords replied that the Crown could not help Giovanni, even though he was a naturalized English citizen, because he was still subject to the law in Naples.

In 1860, Giovanni became bankrupt. He was discharged from bankruptcy in 1861.

Giovanni died in 1869.

Case Of Giovanni Porpa, House of Commons Debates; February 20, 1860, vol. 156, cc1351-2; http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1860/feb/20/question-2:

“Mr. T. Duncombe:

said, he rose to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he has inquired into the truth of the allegations contained in the Petition of Giovanni Porpa, a naturalized British subject, presented on the 26th clay of January last, complaining of wrongs inflicted upon him by the Neapolitan Government; and, if proved to be true, whether he has taken any steps to obtain the Petitioner redress?

1352

Lord John Russell:

said, he had been informed by Lord Malmesbury that the Petitioner, though naturalized in England, was a born subject of the King of Naples; in accordance, therefore, with the usual custom in such cases, the answer to the Petition was, that nothing could be done to take the case out of the jurisdiction of the Neapolitan tribunals. He had not made any further inquiries into the allegations of the Petition.”
