John Robert Smith was a hotel proprietor. He lived at 1873 Nelson Street from 1910 to 1916. His wife, Ellen, was at 1873 Nelson Street in 1917.

John Robert Smith was born in Kentucky on December 13, 1858 (or 1857).

He arrived in Canada about 1885.

By 1895, he was living in Vancouver. It appears that he was living at 130 Powell Street and working as a bartender at the Englewood Hotel.

Marriage to Ellen Louise Johnson

On December 31, 1895, in Vancouver, John married Ellen Louise Johnson. She was born in Sweden on March 23, 1877. Her parents were John (Johan) Bernhard Johnson (1846-1934) and Justina Pauline Mattiasson (Olsen) (1846-1934).

The Johnson family was from Sweden. Ellen’s parents celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1918.

John Johnson died in Vancouver on April 21, 1934.

Pauline Johnson died in Vancouver on November 2, 1934.

 

Life after Marriage

After John and Ellen were married, John continued his occupation as a hotel-keeper.

From 1895 to 1917, the Vancouver directories listed John at the following addresses in Vancouver. (Some of the listings may not be completely accurate.)

In 1910, he began working at the New Fountain Hotel at 45 West Cordova Street.

Also in 1910, the Smith family moved to 1873 Nelson Street.

John died in Vancouver on October 16, 1916. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On August 1, 1919, Ellen married Peter Scott, who was a master mariner. He was born in Kingston, Scotland on January 13, 1879. His parents were John William Scott and Grace Rennie Guthrie.

Peter died in Vancouver on August 24, 1926. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ellen later married John Walters. Ellen died in Vancouver on March 2, 1949. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

John and Ellen had the following children.

 

Ellen Pauline Smith (sometimes called “Emma”)

Ellen Pauline Smith was born in Vancouver on April 8, 1897.

On November 3, 1917, in Vancouver, she married Arthur William Scott, who was a druggist. He was born in Vancouver on January 5, 1893. His parents were John William Scott and Grace Guthrie.

On February 28, 1918, Arthur was drafted to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He served for a time in Russia. He was discharged from the military forces on July 20, 1919, during the demobilization at the end of the war.

Ellen died in White Rock, British Columbia on July 18, 1969.

Arthur died in Vancouver on November 30, 1971.

 

Florence Louisa Smith

Florence Louisa Smith was born in Vancouver on October 7, 1898.

On October 5, 1921, in Vancouver, she married Fredrick Herman Giroux, who was a salesman. He was born in Peterborough, Ontario on February 19, 1892.

He worked as an explosives demonstrator. He had been drafted to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He served in England and France, and he was discharged from the military forces on May 31, 1919, as part of the demobilization at the end of the war.

After the war Fredrick worked as a salesman.

Florence died on November 8, 1973. She was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal.

Frederick may have died in Montreal.

 

Audrey Mae (or May) Smith

Audrey Mae (or May) Smith was born in Vancouver on December 24, 1909.

On May 29, 1931, in New York City, she married Arthur Kemp. He was born on February 21, 1904.

Arthur died in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 26, 1957.

Audrey died in Vancouver on July 30, 1992.

 

Marguerite Ellen Smith

Marguerite Ellen Smith was born in Vancouver on January 19, 1912.

She married Hubert Lawrence Tasker, who was born in New York City in 1905.

Huber died in San Francisco, California on April 11, 1964.
