Redfern Diamond Robbery

In October 1905, the house at 1872 Georgia Street was associated with a diamond robbery case. The house was still new and unoccupied at the time.

Robbers had stolen diamonds and other jewels from C.E. Redfern’s jewellery store in Victoria, British Columbia. Charles Edward Redfern (1839-1929) was a jeweller who also served as Victoria’s mayor in 1883 and from 1896 to 1899.

A woman allegedly named Maud Matthews was associated with the robbery.

The police arrested Charles Redfern’s nephew, Christian Charles Kurtz (sometimes known as “Christopher.”)

Mr. Kurtz led the police to the basement of 1872 Georgia Street, which was the hiding place for the jewels.

Charles Redfern got back all of the jewels and he decided not to proceed with criminal charges.

It soon became clear that the real name of “Maud Matthews” was Rachael David (née Rachael Ellen Webster). She was the widow of Albert David, who had died in Spokane, Washington in 1903. (The second article below gives an incorrect age. Albert David was about 34 when he died. The town in British Columbia was actually Sandon.)
