John Stephenson was a clerk for the British Columbia Electric Railway. He lived at 1841 Morton Avenue in 1915.

[Note: because the name “John Stephenson” was fairly common in Vancouver, much of the following information is based on the assumption that the person at 1841 Morton Avenue is the same person throughout the rest of this biography. This assumption may or may not be correct.]

John Stephenson was born on October 15, 1884, in Manchester, Lancashire, England. His parents were John Stephenson and Margaret Hannah Law.

John Stephenson, Senior, was born in Warley, Halifax, Yorkshire about 1842. He became an umbrella maker and a draper. He died in Riding, Northumberland, in January 1914.

Margaret Hanna Law was born in Stainland, Halifax, Yorkshire in 1853. She died in Riding in June 1914.

On August 6, 1913, in Vancouver, John married Marjorie Woodstock South.

Marjorie was born in Brisbane, Australia on January 30, 1893. Her parents were Charles John Wesley South (1850-1923) and Emma Burdon Unthank (1850-1926). Marjorie’s father, Charles, was an advocate for the welfare of children.

He also served as Vancouver’s deputy police magistrate. He died in Vancouver on September 17, 1923.

It appears that Marjorie’s mother, Emma, went back to live in Australia. She died in 1926.

 

John and Marjorie in Vancouver

After their marriage, John and Marjorie lived at the corner of Tenth Avenue and Alberta Street.

In 1914, John was a cashier with Alpha Mortgage and Investment Corporation.

In 1915, John was a clerk with the British Columbia Electric Railway.

On February 22, 1916, in Vancouver, John signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was living at number 27, Kenilworth Apartments (843 Cardero Street).

He was killed in action in Belgium on November 10, 1917. He was buried in the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial Cemetery in Belgium.

 

Marjorie’s Later Life

Marjorie later married James Lawrence Thompson. He was born in Ireland on December 7, 1888. He had been married to Marjorie’s sister, Dorothy May South, who died in 1918.

In 1921, James and Marjorie were living in Carbon, Alberta. James was a bank manager.

They later lived in Coldwater, Ontario and Sudbury, Ontario.

Marjorie died on July 21, 1944. She was buried in Little Lake Cemetery, in Peterborough, Ontario.

James died on December 27, 1968. He was buried in Little Lake Cemetery, in Peterborough.

 

John Stephenson and Marjorie South had a son.

 

John Norman Stephenson

John Norman Stephenson was born in Vancouver on January 9, 1915.

He worked as an investment clerk.

During the Second World War he served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He died on September 7, 1944. He was buried in Calais Canadian War Cemetery (Leubringhen), Pas de Calais, France.
