Conley, Charles (1841-1915)

Charles Conley was a carpenter. He was at 1863 Morton Avenue in 1909 and at 1841 Morton Avenue from 1910 to 1913. A person named Charles Conley also appeared at 1842 Pendrell Street from 1909 to 1913.

 

Early Life

Charles Conley was born on June 10, 1841, in Toronto, Ontario. It appears that his parents were John and Elizabeth Conley.

Charles was married to an unknown person, who died before 1886. It appears that Charles may have lived in Oakland, California for a time. He was a member of the Oakland lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows.

 

To British Columbia

By the early 1880s, Charles was living in Victoria, British Columbia.

On May 5, 1886, in Victoria, Charles married Sophia Luxford. She was born on May 6, 1855 in London, England. Her parents were Thomas Bass White and Catherine White.

Sophia had been married before, to Frederick Luxford (1839-1884). Frederick was born in Dartford, Kent, England on October 13, 1839. He was a gardener and seed salesman. It appears that Frederick and Sophia had lived in New York State about 1870. By the mid-1870s, Frederick and Sophia were in Victoria. Frederick died in Victoria on October 28, 1884. He was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

Charles and Sophia lived in Victoria until about 1890.

 

To Vancouver

By 1891, Charles appeared in the Vancouver directory, living at 1202 Georgia Street. The 1891 Canada census described him as a retired carpenter.

Charles and Sophia continued to live in Vancouver.

Sophia died in Vancouver on March 6, 1908. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Charles died in Vancouver on January 12, 1915. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Charles Conley, death notice, Vancouver Province, January 13, 1915, page 11: “Conley – Charles Conley, 76 years of ate, who has been a resident of the city for about 27 years, passed away at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
