Robert Hamilton was an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway freight department. He lived at 1850 Alberni Street from 1920 to 1922.

 

Early Life

Robert Hamilton was born in Durham, Sunderland, England, on May 30, 1880. His parents were Joseph Hamilton (1849-1917) and Dorothy Paxton (1851-1928). Joseph Hamilton was a miner.

 

To Canada

The Hamilton family moved to Canada about 1908. Some of the family settled in Fernie, British Columbia.

 

To Vancouver

Robert Hamilton first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. He was a baggageman for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Marriage to Agnes Patterson

On October 1, 1910, in Vancouver, Robert married Agnes Patterson. She was born in April 1889 in Glasgow, Scotland. Her parents were William Patterson and Martha McKinnon. (Agnes may have had a brother, Thomas Russell Patterson (1894-1952), who lived in Detroit, Michigan.)

It appears that Agnes died between 1911 and 1916.

In 1916, Robert was living in Morrissey, a small coal-mining town in southeastern British Columbia.

 

Marriage to Alice English

On April 18, 1916, in Michel, British Columbia (another small town not far from Morrissey), Robert married Alice English, who was a dress-maker. She was born in Sunderland, Durham, England on June 24, 1883. Her parents were George James English (1856-1934) and Alice Webster (1860-1926).

 

Later Life

Robert and Alice lived in Vancouver through the 1920s and most of the 1930s.

Alice died in Vancouver on October 22, 1938. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Robert died in Vancouver on May 6, 1959. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Robert and Agnes had a daughter.

 

Vivian Dorothy Hamilton

Vivian Dorothy Hamilton was born in Vancouver about 1912.

On February 28, 1930, in Vancouver, she married Wallace Reid, who was a carpenter. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 25, 1908. His parents were William Reid and Mary Botwick.

Wallace died in Vancouver on April 8, 1952. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

In 1953, Vivian was a clerk at Owen’s Food Centre. She was living at 819 Durward Street.

In 1955 she was living at 3215 East 50th Avenue.

In 1959 she was living in Boston Bar, British Columbia.

 

Robert and Agnes had the following children.

 

Elsie Marjorie Hamilton

Elsie Marjorie Hamilton was born in Fernie, British Columbia, about 1918.

On March 7, 1940, in Vancouver, she married James Scott, who was a salesman in Spencer’s department store. He was born Vancouver on June 18, 1915. His parents were Alexander Matheson Scott and Annie Foster.

James later worked as an accountant. He died in Penticton, British Columbia, on July 26, 1973. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Robert Leslie Hamilton

It appears that Robert Leslie Hamilton was born in the 1920s.

In 1955 and 1959, he was living at 453 East 50th Avenue in Vancouver. He was working as a clerk for Canadian Pacific Expresss. He was married to Lillian.
