Alson, Isabella Maria (1848-1934)

Isabella Maria Alson was the widow of Captain Daniel Alson. Sometimes she gave her occupation as “nurse.” She lived at 1084 Denman Street in 1908.

Isabella was born about 1848 at 5 New Bridge Avenue, in the Sandymount area of Dublin, Ireland. Her father was Robert Waller; her mother was Isabella Duggan.

In 1870, Isabella married Daniel Alson. He died sometime before Isabella came to Canada, which was in the 1890s.

By 1920, Isabella was living in San Francisco, California, although she was still in the Vancouver directories and the Canada census in 1921 as well, along with her daughter, Olive, and her son-in-law, William Marriott.

Isabella died in 1934. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles, California.

Isabella had a brother named Robert Waller, who also lived in Vancouver. He was born in Dublin on November 2, 1845. He was married to Martha Pellow Alson, who was Daniel Alson’s sister. Robert Waller came to Canada about 1881. He was a clerk at the Municipal Hall in West Vancouver, British Columbia. He died in West Vancouver on March 1, 1919; he was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Daniel Alson and Isabelle Waller had the following children.

 

Cesarine Alson

Cesarine Alson was born about 1874. In 1897 she married Hamilton Stewart Brown (1870-1934). She died on May 2, 1961, Bedfordshire, England.

 

Olive Mary Alson

Olive Mary Alson was born on December 12, 1880, in Sandymount, Dublin, Ireland. On August 5, 1917, in Vancouver, she married William Robert Marriott. He was born on April 16, 1880.

William died on August 16, 1953. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles, California.

Olive died in Benton, Oregon, in 1972.

 

Annie Alson

Annie Alson was a dressmaker. In 1903 and 1904, she was living with Isabella and Olive. By 1906, she was working for S. Tamura, who ran “Sun Ban,” a retail outlet for Japanese curios and products at 520 Granville Street.

 

Gertrude Alson

Gertrude Alson was a clerk, who was living with Isabella and Olive in 1910 and 1911.
