Frank’s Early Life

Frank went to school at the Handsworth grammar school in Birmingham.

He was an officer in the Fifth Royal Irish Volunteers of Liverpool.

On August 12, 1874, in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales, Frank married Theresa Matilda While. She was born in Trefores, Glamorganshire on September 19, 1848. Her parents were George While (1819-1909) and Kezia Swain (1822-1891).

In 1878, Frank earned a shorthand teaching certificate from Isaac Pitman (1813-1897), the developer of the Pitman shorthand system. Frank’s daughter, Eveline, also became an expert shorthand practitioner and teacher.

In the 1881 England and Wales census, the Richards family was living at number 26 Broadlands in Westhoughton, Lancashire. Frank was a public accountant.

 

Travel to British Columbia (With a Brief Return to England)

Frank first travelled to Vancouver in the late 1880s. In 1889 he operated a saloon with John James Sparrow.

At the time of the 1891 England and Wales census, Frank and the rest of the Richards family were in Clapham, London. Frank was a surveyor.

He later formed an architectural and survey partnership with Robert Mason, with offices in Manchester. In 1896, they dissolved the partnership.

In late 1898, the Vancouver Board of Trade was exploring the possibility of using the S.S. Manauense to improve shipping from San Francisco to Vancouver and to other ports on the northwest coast of North America.

In August 1898, the Manuense took several passengers north to the gold fields. One of the passengers was not satisfied with the trip, and filed a claim for a return of his $950 fare from England to Dawson City, as well as damages of $5,000. (In admiralty law, the first pleading in an action is called a “libel.”)

By 1899, Frank had become the Vancouver agent for the S.S. Manauense.

Later in 1899, Frank was in Liverpool, England, promoting mining projects in Atlin, British Columbia, and Dawson, Yukon Territory.

In 1900, Frank had an English fancy goods importing business on Granville Street in Vancouver.

He was later associated with the Pitman Business College in Vancouver. His daughter, Eveline, was the head of the school.

For a period of time, Frank was the acting police magistrate in Vancouver. He became ill in the spring of 1907, but he recovered.

He was an advocate for government insurance and old age pensions.

For some periods after 1912 Frank and Theresa lived in a house called “The Hermitage” in Yale, British Columbia.

Frank died in Yale on January 18, 1921. He was buried in Hope View Cemetery in Yale.

Ernest Frank George Richards

Ernest Frank George Richards was born in Birmingham, England, on May 17, 1875.

On August 9, 1902, in Vancouver, he married Ellen Tinniswood. She was born in London, England, on January 28, 1872. Her parents were George Tinniswood and Helen (Ellen) Chalmers.

He worked as a notary public.

He enlisted with the Royal Engineers during the First World War. While he was serving in Mesopotamia, he died on July 17, 1917, as a result of the intense heat.

Ellen died in Vancouver on January 19, 1952. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

William Austin Swain Richards was born on February 16, 1878, in Ormskirk, Lancashire.

In 1903, when he was living at Yale, British Columbia, he obtained a hydraulic lease for mining.

On September 4, 1909, in Yale, British Columbia, he married Florence Emma F. Hoult. She was born in England about 1878. She had arrived in Canada from England in May 1908.

Theresa Gertrude Beatrice Richards

Theresa Gertrude Beatrice Richards was born on December 8, 1879, in Pemberton, Lancashire. (She was sometimes called “Gertrude” or “Gertie.”)

She studied nursing at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, and in 1906 she became the head nurse at the hospital.

On January 6, 1909, in Vancouver, she married Thomas Ellis Ladner, who was an accountant. He was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, on January 3, 1871. His parents were Thomas Ellis Ladner and Edna Booth.

Thomas later became a farmer. He died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on July 23, 1958.

Gertrude died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 7, 1976.

 

Victoria Florence Louise Richards

Victoria Florence Louise Richards was born in England on October 7, 1881.

She never married.

She died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 11, 1969.

 

Ethel Maude Kezia Richards

Ethel Maude Kezia Richards was born in England on June 2, 1883.

On September 19, 1906, in Vancouver, she married Charles Punter, who was a clerk in the stores department of Canadian Pacific Railway Company. He was born in Bournemouth, England, on November 8, 1874. His parents were Arthur James Punter and Mary Cottrell.

Charles later worked as an accountant for the Pacific Great Eastern Railway.

Charles died in Vancouver on July 9, 1958.

Ethel died in Vancouver on October 4, 1971.

 

Arthur Savours Gould Richards

Arthur Savours Gould Richards was born on October 14, 1891, in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England.

He worked as a surveyor.

On June 16, 1916, in Vancouver, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. While he was with the Canadian Railway Troops, he was killed on April 4, 1917. He was buried in Highland Cemetery, Roclincourt ; Pas de Calais, France.

Russell Joseph Graham Richards

Russell Joseph Graham Richards was born on July 5, 1895, at Winslow, England.

He became a teacher in British Columbia and Alberta public schools. He was also a law student in Vancouver and in Calgary, Alberta.

On October 28, 1916, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

He was discharged on June 18, 1919, as part of the general demobilization. He later became a lawyer.

On March 29, 1924, in Vancouver, he married Annie (Nan) Joyce Woods. She was born on November 21, 1894, in Adelaide, Australia. Her parents were Peter Wood (1855-1921) and Alice Maude Johnson (1862-1945).

After some time in Vancouver, Russell and Nan lived in Trail, British Columbia, for many years. They returned to Vancouver in 1950.

Russell served on the West Vancouver council, and he was the reeve (equivalent to mayor) from 1957 to 1958.

Russell died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on February 11, 1988.

Nan died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on October 13, 1987.
