Samuel Francis Johnson was a hardware dealer. He lived at 952 Denman Street in 1902.

Family Background

Samuel Francis Johnson (often called “S.F. Johnson”) was born in Suffolk, England on March 4, 1833. His parents were William F. Johnson (1804-1857) and Maria Bond (born 1805).

William F. Johnson and Maria Bond were married in Suffolk on May 14, 1832. They had two sons: Samuel Francis Johnson, and William F. Johnson, Junior, who was born on January 14, 1834.

It appears that Maria died between 1834 and 1841.

By 1841, the Johnson family was in Canada.

On March 11, 1841, William married Sarah Mary Willett. Sarah was born in Dorking, Surrey, England on February 9, 1820. Her parents were Richard Willett (1781–1867) and Martha Skilton (1785–1844).

In 1851, William and Sarah were living in Woolwich, Waterloo County, Canada West (which later became the province of Ontario).

Residences in Vancouver

From 1899 to 1906, Samuel lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1899-1900 978 Broughton Street
1901 819 Nicola Street

Samuel and his son, Norman, first appeared in the 1899-1900 Vancouver directory: the names directory said they were at 9 Broughton Street. However, their actual address was 978 Broughton Street, which was not far from the residence of Samuel’s business partner, John McPhail, at 992 Broughton Street.

Johnson and McPhail: Hardware Business in Vancouver

In 1898, Samuel opened a hardware store in Vancouver, in partnership with John Randolph McPhail (1856-1932).

Vancouver Province, December 13, 1898, page 7, columns 3-4.

Johnson and McPhail occupied the former space of J. A. Skinner and Company, who were distributors of crockery, china and glassware. (Frederick Buscombe (1862-1938) was associated with J.A. Skinner before he took over the business on his own. A few days later, a young man named “Norman Johnston” was found lying on a downtown Vancouver street. He had a serious case of tuberculosis.

Although it is not certain, it appears that this was Samuel’s son, Norman. (The newspaper reports said that Norman was associated with a hardware business “on Hastings Street, near Seymour.” The Johnson & McPhail hardware business was at 514 Hastings Street, between Richards Street and Seymour Street.)

Business in San Francisco

By 1908, Samuel was operating a saloon in the Glen Park area of San Francisco. It was at the northwest corner of Diamond Street and Chenery Street.

San Francisco Crocker-Langley Directory, 1908, page 960; https://archive.org/details/crockerlangleysa1908sanfrich/page/960.

In 1908, a fire and an explosion destroyed a grocery store next door to the saloon. The building that housed the saloon also suffered extensive damage.

Four people died at the scene, and several people were injured. Some reports said that an oil tank in the grocery store might have caused the explosion. Others suggested that dynamite was the cause.

Bond family of Shadingfield, Suffolk Co, England; by Carol Washburn June 25, 2004 at 07:18:22; https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/bond/3452/

I am looking for information on the family of Maria Bond, born 17 Feb 1805 in Shadingfield, Suffolk, England. Supposed to be the daughter of Robert Bond and Anne Welton. I believe she married William F Johnson around 1832 and had two children: Samuel Francis Johnson, born 4 Mar 1833 and William F Johnson, born 14 Jan 1834, both supposed to be born in Shadingfield. IGI indicates she may have had brothers Robert Charles Edward and Henry. If anyone has any info on any of these people or can do any “lookups, ” please let me know.

. . .

Since being in touch with Ken, I have learned a few more tidbits about “my” William Johnson. I know he was educated-he was able to read and write, unlike the Bond family he married into (neither Maria nor her brother Edward were able to sign their names). The marriage was witnessed by Maria Bond’s brother Edward and a woman named Elizabeth Rackham. The marriage certificate also gave his place of residence as Willingham. Both of William and Maria’s sons were baptized in Shadingfield. He witnessed a marriage between William Stammer (from Weston) and Rhoda Smith (from Willingham) 23 Nov 1829 in North Cove.

“I finally was able to gather some information in regards to my Thomas Claffy. According to the 1861 Newmarket, Ontario Census, my Thomas Claffy was about 30 years old. He was born in Ireland, was Roman Catholic and worked as a tailor. It also shows he died within one year of the census, of consumption. . . .

I’ve checked the birth, marriage and death registers for Newmarket, no record was kept of any of this (too early).”

“Since posting that message in 2003, I have found out more about “my” Thomas Claffy.

He was born (according to his death records) about March of 1832. His father was James Claffy, born between 1780 (according to obit) and 1795 (1855 NY census). His mother’s name was Mary (last name unknown). He had siblings Patrick Henry Claffy, born about March 1832 (possible twin), Ann Claffy, born about 1828, John Claffy, born about 1825, and Joseph Claffy, born about 1840.

The family moved from King’s Co, Ireland to NY and lived in the Fort Ann and Sandy Hill area (Washington and Warren Counties). James died in Newmarket, York Co, Ontario in 1860.

Any connections or info on this family would be greatly appreciated!”

“Boerner, Joan H. “Hendy” Passed away November 15, 2012 in the Highlands at Newcastle, Mequon, Wisconsin. Hendy was born December 5, 1928 in Edgerton, Wisconsin to Max and Nora (Nee Johnson) Henderson. She was the great-granddaughter of Alexander Henderson who emigrated to the Wisconsin Territory from Kildrummy, Scotland in 1834. Her family moved in 1936 to Winnetka, Illinois where she graduated from New Trier High School. She attended the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and, in 1950, earned a BA degree from the School of Education with high honors. She was president of Kappa Alpha Theta, her sorority, and was one of the prettiest girls on campus. Her father paid for her college education on condition that she earn nothing below a B in her class work. Hendy was a strong ethical person who took responsibility for herself early in life; she worked since early high school. Hendy married Roger, April 14, 1951, while he was in Law school and went with him to Oberammergau, Germany when he was called into the service. They returned to Milwaukee in 1954 where her two children, Susan and Ellen were born. She was always reading, was good at languages and loved to dance. Hendy was a full time Mom but found time to volunteer for Junior League projects, the Genslen School and the Milwaukee Art Center. She was co-chairman of the second Lake Front Festival of Art. Starting in 1966 she traveled annually with Roger, bird watching and sight-seeing to countries all around the world. They owned a winter home in Tucson, Arizona that she enjoyed immensely. When both children were in high school or about to get out, she took a job at UWM with a Faculty Search and Screen Committee and later became an assistant to the Dean of the UWM School of Business. Hendy played social golf and tennis and, after her children were gone from the house, swam a mile a day. She had a wonderful sense of humor enjoyed a good party and loved her many friends. In addition to her two children, Susan and Ellen, and Roger, her husband for 62 years, Hendy is survived by two grandchildren, Kelly and Michael Riordan, four nephews and nieces and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Henderson Hill, her brother-in-law, Frederick Hill and by her parents.
