Chappell Brothers operated a boat-building and boat-repair business at the north end of Georgia Street, just east of Denman Street, from about 1909 to the 1940s. Later directories give the address as 1779 West Georgia, which appears to be District Lot 185, Block 54, Lot 13.
John Graham Chappell was born on November 25, 1840, in Breaston, Derbyshire, England. He married Maria Denton in Thornes by Wakefield, England on March 5, 1865. John and Maria stayed in England until about 1877, after which they went to Nebraska in the United States, where they had several more children. The family arrived in Vancouver about 1906.
By 1909, Chappell Brothers had appeared on the south shore of Coal Harbour, near the intersection of Denman Street and Georgia Street. The four named brothers in the business were Ernest Denton Chappell (1870-1953); Frederick Herbert Chappell (1881-1978); Joseph Wright Chappell (1866-1925); and William Guinness Chappell (1878-1964). It is not clear that their father, John Graham Chappell, took any active role in the business.
John Graham Chappell died on January 3, 1930, at Essondale, British Columbia. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.
Maria Chappell died in Vancouver on November 25, 1922. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.
