Augustus William Kamp was a retired banker and an operator of a millinery business. He lived at 2029 Pendrell Street in 1912. His wife, Lillian, was at 2029 Pendrell Street in 1913.

His real name was Augustus William (or Wilhelm) Ritzinger. He used the surname “Kamp” only in the last few years of his life.

Family Background

Augustus William Ritzinger was born on November 28, 1848, in Woerstadt, Germany. His parents were Frederick (Friederich) Ritzinger (1819-1879) and Marianne Kamp (1817-1889) (sometimes called “Anna Maria”).

Frederick Ritzinger was involved in the German revolutions of 1848-1849. Like many protesters in the revolution, he was arrested and confined for a time in the tower in Mayence (Mainz).

The Ritzingers later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Augustus Ritzinger’s Early Life

When Augustus was young, he lived with his family in Indianapolis. He was a student at the local German-English Independent School.

By 1870 he was a clerk in the family’s bank in Indianapolis.

Marriage to Elizabeth (Martha) Ramsay

On April 22, 1874, Augustus married Elizabeth Martha Ramsay (sometimes called “Martha”). She was born in Indianapolis on May 29, 1852. Her parents were John F. Ramsay and Leah Malott (née McKeown).

John Ramsay died in Indianapolis on December 19, 1883.

In 1907, Augustus was vice president and treasurer of the company. (According to one source, Augustus was also a wholesale furniture dealer for a time.)

The Ritzingers were well-known members of St. Paul society. In 1901, their daughter, Elinor, was a debutante at a party of between 300 and 400 guests. The party was at the Ritzinger home at 661 Fairmount Avenue in St. Paul.

Arrival in Vancouver

After Elizabeth’s death, Augustus moved to British Columbia. It appears that he lived briefly in Victoria before arriving in Vancouver.

About the time he arrived in British Columbia, he began using “Kamp” as his surname, rather than “Ritzinger.” (The reasons for this change are not clear. His mother’s maiden name was “Kamp.”)

On February 3, 1910, in Vancouver, Augustus married Lillian Mary Grindley. She was born in England on January 22, 1862. Her parents were Thomas Grindley and Esther Maltby. Lillian’s brother was Thomas Grindley, who was a merchant and politician in Edmonton, Alberta.

It seems likely that Augustus had met Lillian while she was a resident of St. Paul, Minnesota during the 1890s or early 1900s.

Lillian’s Adopted Daughter

Lillian’s death notice mentions a daughter, Mrs. V. Martin. She was actually Lillian’s adopted daughter, who was born in Penticton, British Columbia in 1907 with the name of Verbal May Guynup. Her parents were William Guynup and Nancy Ellen “Nellie” Lemmon. William Guynup was a carpenter.

Nellie Guynup died on April 28, 1908. (One source says that she died in Brandon, Manitoba.) She was buried in the Red Deer Cemetery in Red Deer, Alberta.

In March 1911, Verbal was just over three years old. Her father had left her with friends in Vancouver. The friends sent her on a train to Chilliwack, with a sign around her neck saying that she was travelling to meet her father. Unfortunately, her father was actually in New Westminster at the time. Verbal ended up in the care of the Children’s Aid Society.

At the time of the 1911 Canada census, Verbal was living in Chilliwack with the family of Adam Sherlaw. Lillian Kamp later adopted her.

William Guynup later lived in Barrhead, Alberta. He died on October 17, 1952. (Note: the reference to “Prince George” in the death notice below should be to “Prince Rupert.”)

On September 4, 1929, in Vancouver, Verbal married Victor Martin, who was a longshoreman. He was born in Kitchener (formerly Berlin), Ontario on March 3, 1904. His parents were Otto Joseph Martin and Rose Kernofosky (Rosa Kernowski). (Although the typed portion of the marriage registration gave Verbal’s first name as “Vesbal,” the signature said “Verbal.” One of the witnesses was Lillian M. Kamp.)

August married Martha Elizabeth Ramsay, daughter of John and Leah (McKeown) Ramsay, natives of Ohio. After schooling, August entered the banking industry in Indianapolis and then later moved to St. Paul, MN where he engaged in the wholesale trade of furniture. His wife, Martha died in St. Paul in 1908 at the age of 55 years. After her death August moved to Vancouver where he died in 1912 at the age of 64. Augustus and Elizabeth (Lizzie) were partners in Straus and Robinson Millinery in St. Paul, MN. This was a mail order and training center for young ladies to become milliners in their homes across the Midwest. They published two to three mail order catalogs every year. There were two other stores, one in New York City and another in Paris, France. They traveled annually to Europe buy materials and get new ideas for their business.

Obituary from the San Antonio Light, October 29, 1985:

“Dr. Frederick Ritzinger Developed Pressure Suit

Through a combined love of flying and medicine, Dr Frederick Ritzinger developed a high altitude pressure suit for military pilots and gave physicals to air traffic controllers in addition to having a private practice.

Ritzinger and his wife, Norma, were killed Sunday in a traffic accident on U.S. Highway 281 just north of Encino Loop.  He was 72, she was 61.  Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Rev. Ralph Shuffler officiating with interment following in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

The Ritzingers were traveling south on U.S. 281 when their car was involved in a head-on collision with a northbound vehicle.  They were thrown from their car.  The driver of the other car, Frank O. Gebhardt, 28, of Bulverde, was treated and released from Methodist Hospital.

Ritzinger, a general practitioner, was born and reared in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He graduated from the University of Washington and went to medical school at Illinois University and Duke University. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Public Health from Harvard University School of Medicine.

In the early 1960’s, he moved to San Antonio when he joined the Air Force.  He is credited with developing a high altitude pressure suit designed for flight above 50,000 feet while he was stationed at Brooks Air Force Base in the middle 1960’s. After serving 21 years as an Air Force Flight Surgeon, he retired with the rank of colonel and assumed duties as medical director of General Dynamics in St. Louis.

Later, he entered private practice in Universal City and at the same time worked with the Federal Aviation Administration as senior medical examiner.  His duties with the FAA included giving physicals to air traffic controllers and other FAA personnel.

He was medical director of Morningside Manor and was also an active member of San Antonio Hangar of Quiet Birdmen as well as many other clubs and organizations.  Dr. Ritzinger was honored by the Chinese Air Force as only the second recipient of the Golden Flight Wings for his establishing the first hospital of the Chinese Air Force.  He was also recipient of the Air Medal and other commendations.

Mrs. Ritzinger, born in Gowrie, Iowa, was a member of the Bexar County Women’s Medical Auxiliary Association, the Woodlake Country Club and was involved in civic activities, including volunteer work at blood banks.  She was also past president of the Bel Meade Garden Club. She was the vision screener for St. David’s Episcopal Church and a Red Cross volunteer. Mrs. Ritzinger also held several offices in the Air Force Officer’s Wives Club.

Survivors include daughters . . . [three]; grandchildren, . . . [four].

Dr. Ritzinger is also survived by brothers . . . [two]. Mrs. Ritzinger is also survived by sisters. . . [two]; and a brother, . . . .”
