Lewis, Grace Viola (1877-1952)

Grace Viola Lewis was the widow of Arthur Henry Lewis. She lived at 1800 Nelson Street in 1914 and 1915 and at 1034 Denman Street from 1916 to 1919.

Grace Viola Lewis was born on September 17, 1877, in Iowa. Her father was Alfred McGowan Pease (1851-1917), who was a drayman. Grace’s mother was Amelia Isabel (sometimes called “Isabella Amelia”) Bauder (1858-1910).

In 1887, the Pease family was living in Victoria, British Columbia. Alfred Pease was a clerk with Charles Russell’s variety store.

By the mid-1890s, the family had moved to Vancouver.

On June 8, 1898, in Vancouver, Grace married Arthur Henry Lewis, who was a dispatcher with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He was born in Mooretown, Ontario, on May 22, 1871. His father was John Lewis, who was a school teacher. His mother was Sarah Ellis.

For the first few years of their marriage, Arthur and Grace lived in the Kootenay district of British Columbia. In 1901, Arthur was working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Trail.

After Arthur and Grace arrived in Vancouver about 1904, the family lived at the following addresses.

Arthur became a bookkeeper with the trucking and storage firm of Lapoint and Pease. (William Joseph La Point lived at 715 Cambie Street in 1904. Alfred Pease, Grace’s father, was the other member of the firm.)

By 1905, Arthur had become a member of the firm.

In 1907, Mr. Lapoint was no longer with the firm.

In late 1907, Arthur went to Toronto, Ontario. He died in Toronto on December 6, 1907. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Grace continued to live in Vancouver until the early 1950s. She died in Vancouver on January 31, 1952. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Arthur and Grace had the following children.

 

Muriel Isabel Lewis

Muriel Isabel Lewis was born in Vancouver on July 28, 1899.

On June 30, 1920, she married James Wyllie Kenning (often called “Wyllie”), who was a customs officer. He was born in Vancouver on Mary 3, 1894. His father was James Alexander Kenning (1866-1936). His mother was Catherine Gibb (1867-1935).

Wyllie died in Vancouver on February 12, 1968.

Muriel died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 18, 1993.

 

Margaret Grace Viola Lewis

Margaret Grace Viola Lewis was born in Vancouver on October 12, 1903.

By 1921, Margaret was married to Mr. Jessop.

In 1953, Margaret became a naturalized United States citizen. She was living in Santa Monica, California.

It appears that Margaret died in 1960. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Arthur Boyd Lewis

Arthur Boyd Lewis was born in August about 1902.

In 1911 and 1921 he was living with his mother in Vancouver.

He was still alive in 1952. No further information is available for him.
