1000 Denman Street

1000 Denman Street was on the southeast corner of Denman Street and Nelson Street. (In one earlier source, the street number appears as 1004 Denman Street, but the normal number for this building was 1000 Denman.)

1000 Denman Street first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. It was a grocery store, and it continued as grocery-related business through most years until the early 1950s.

In the 1930s, the Victorine Langre Chocolate Shop was at 1000 Denman Street. Mrs. Leonie W. Weeden (1890-1980) was the proprietor, and Victorine Langré was the maiden name of Leonie’s mother.

Leonie Weeden later spent many years as a prospector and placer miner. She died in Lillooet, British Columbia on March 31, 1980.

From 1938 to 1940, the Denman Fruit Market was at 1000 Denman Street. In 1940, an auctioneer sold the market’s fixtures and groceries.

In the 1940s, John Sangster operated a bakery at 1000 Denman Street.

By 1954, the building at 1000 Denman Street was gone, and the Denman Esso service station was at 1004 Denman Street. Charles Frederick George Prior (1902-1982) was the manager of the service station.

In October 1954, two young men were arrested after money went missing from the cash register of the service station at 1004 Denman Street.
