Henry (Harry) Digby was a bricklayer. He lived with his family at the rear of 1867 Georgia Street in 1912 and 1913.

Henry Digby was born on March 27, 1859, in Great Leighs, Essex, England. (His father may have been William or Charles Digby.)

In 1885, in the Lambeth district in London, England, Henry married Emma Boston. She was born about 1856 in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Her parents were George and Charlotte Boston.

Henry and Emma lived in the Lambeth district until about 1911, when they moved to Vancouver.

Henry first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1912. He was living at the rear of 1867 Georgia Street; he later appeared at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Emma died in Vancouver on September 19, 1914. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

During and after the First World War, Henry worked at a series of jobs, including general laborer, street cleaner and building janitor.

Henry died in Vancouver on November 16, 1926. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Henry and Emma had the following children.

 

Albert Henry Digby

Albert Henry Digby was born in Great Leighs, Chelmsford, Essex, England, on July 21, 1885 (one source says 1884).

He was living with his parents in 1891 and 1901.

In 1907 in Lambeth district, London, Albert married Eliza Jane Miles. She was born in London on September 6, 1883. Her father was James Miles. Her mother was Alice Hancock.

Albert was associated for about 10 years with the Royal Engineers military forces in England.

After arriving in Canada, he worked as a carpenter.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in September 1914. In March 1915 he was wounded at Fleur Baix, when an exploding shell caused a sandbag to fall on him. The sandbag knocked him into a shell hole, where he damaged his knee. After surgery and a period of treatment failed to restore him to normal health, he returned to Canada, where he was discharged from the military forces.

He later worked for the Post Office.

Albert died in Vancouver on July 8, 1977.

Eliza died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on September 4, 1978.

 

Edith Mary Digby

Edith Mary Digby was born in Lambeth district, London, England, on August 15, 1887.

In 1891 and 1901, she was living with her parents.

It appears that she travelled to Canada in 1911.

In June 1911 she was working as a maid for the family of William James Twiss (1869-1953), who was the Vancouver manager of the Mutual Life Assurance Company. The Twiss family lived at 1137 Beach Avenue.

On November 30, 1912, in Vancouver, Edith married Frederick John Quinlan, who was a carpenter. He was born on April 1, 1880, in Stratford, Essex, England. His father was Cornelius Quinlan (perhaps also called Edward Quinlan). Frederick’s mother was Charlotte Scruby.

Frederick had served with British military forces during both the Boer War. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

Frederick later worked as a customs officer in Vancouver.

Frederick died in Vancouver on January 14, 1956. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Edith died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on January 12, 1968. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby.

 

George Ernest Digby

George Ernest Digby was born in Lambeth, London, in 1889.

In 1891 and 1901 he was living with his parents.

He was living in 1926.

 

Herbert Edward Digby

Herbert Edward Digby was born in Brixton, England, on December 25, 1891.

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

He may have been working for the Canadian Pacific Railway at Walhachin, British Columbia in 1911.

In November 1914, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

He was wounded in the war, and he died on May 7, 1916. He was buried in Voormezeele Enclosure No.3 near Ieper, Belgium.

 

Frederick William Digby

Frederick William Digby was born on June 2, 1894, in Brixton, London, England. In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

He worked as a cutter for the shoe-making firm of J. Leckie Company in Vancouver.

In September 1914 he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. During the war he suffered from shell shock and he had a gunshot wound in his left knee, but he was otherwise fit. He was discharged from the military force in February 1919.

On June 29, 1921, in Vancouver, he married Elsie Corisande Davey. She was born in Fulham, London, England, on November 28, 1897. Her father was Thomas Charles Davey. Her mother was Georgina Kemp.

Frederick later worked for the maintenance department of Woolworth’s department store.

Elsie died in Vancouver on October 19, 1948. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Frederick later married Bernice Mary Connow.

Frederick died in Vancouver on March 18, 1960. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

 

Ethel Maud Digby

Ethel Maud Digby was born in Lambeth, London, England on March 14, 1896.

From 1901 to 1911 she was living with her parents. In 1921 she was living in Vancouver with her father.

She married James Quinlan. He was born in England on March 15, 1886. (He may have been the brother of Frederick John Quinlan, who was married to Ethel’s sister, Edith.)

Ethel worked as a nurse at Essondale, British Columbia.

Ethel died in a fire in her home in Burnaby, British Columbia, on October 13, 1957. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

James died in Vancouver on April 8, 1981.

 

Charles Alfred Digby

Charles Alfred Digby was born in Lambeth, London, England, on June 21, 1898.

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents. In 1921 he was living with his father.

In the 1920s he was a shoe cutter.

On March 18, 1926, in Vancouver, he married Gertrude Joyce West. She was born on June 30, 1903, in Woodford, Essex, England. Her father was Thomas West. Her mother was Minnie Collins Clark.

Gertrude died in Vancouver on December 2, 1976.

Charles died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 7, 1989.

 

Dorothy Grace Digby

Dorothy Grace Digby was born in Lambeth, London, on July 25, 1900.

She lived with her parents in 1901 and 1911. In 1921 she was living with her father.

On June 2, 1922, in South Vancouver, British Columbia, she married John Newbery, who was a shoe cutter. He was born in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England, on June 1, 1901. His father was William Newbery. His mother was Ellen Bates.

John died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on February 12, 1980.

Dorothy died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on April 26, 1991.

The deceased had been a resident of this city for sixteen years. He is survived by four sons, Harry, Frederick, Charles and Ernest, also three daughters, Mrs. F.J. Quinlan, Mrs. J. Newberry [sic] and Miss Esther Digby, all of this city.”
