Thomas Heaslip was the manager of the Denman Billiard Parlor at 1182 Denman Street. His wife, Emma, was a dressmaker. They lived at 1180 Denman Street in 1909.

Family Background

Thomas Smith Heaslip was born in Escott, Leeds, Ontario, on March 24, 1864. His parents were Samuel Atchison Heaslip (1837-1923) and Frances Margaret Allen (1831-1921).

In the 1870s and early 1880s, the Heaslip family was in Gananoque, east of Kingston, Ontario.

By the mid-1880s, the family was in Riverside, south of Brandon, Manitoba. Samuel Heaslip acquired land under the Canadian homestead scheme, starting with 160 acres in 1886. By 1901 he had a total of 960 acres.

Samuel left Manitoba in the early 1900s. By 1906, the Heaslip family was at 1409 Burrard Street in Vancouver. Many members of the family continued to live at 1409 Burrard until the early 1920s.

In 1908, Samuel was with the Independent Drug Store at 2249 Westminster Avenue (later called Main Street).

Samuel’s wife, Frances, died in Vancouver on January 15, 1921. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Samuel died in Vancouver on July 1, 1923. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Thomas Smith Heaslip

In 1871 and 1881, Thomas was with his family in Gananoque, Ontario.

He later moved to Manitoba with his parents.

By 1901, Thomas was married to Emma, and they had a daughter, Lillie, who was born in 1895.

Thomas’s wife may have been Emma Julia Shorbund (or Sjorband), who was born about 1873. Her parents were Peter Olson Shorbund and his wife, Petra (or Petronelle).

In 1905, Thomas Heaslip was convicted of robbing the post office in Minto, Manitoba. He had been running a furniture store and general store in Minto.

The appeal judges said that the evidence against Mr. Heaslip was weak.

The final result of the case is not available.

Thomas first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1906. He was living with his parents at 1409 Burrard Street. Thomas lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1906 to 1907 1409 Burrard Street
1908 2406 Westminster Road
1909 1180 Denman Street
1910 to 1921 1409 Burrard Street

Thomas had a variety of jobs, including druggist; proprietor of billiard parlour/pool hall; miner; carpenter; and warehouseman.

In August 1908, the New Life Medical Company announced a contest to promote “New Life,” a stomach tonic and indigestion cure.

In November 1908, “Miss Heaslip” and “Francis Heaslip” of 1180 Denman Street were winners in the contest. (Francis was Thomas Heaslip’s niece.)

In 1908, Thomas and Emma were living at 2406 Westminster Road when Emma held a party for her friends.

By 1913, Emma Heaslip was living at 757 Harris Street, along with Lillian, who was a milliner. The 1913 directory described Emma as Thomas’s widow; it appears that Thomas and Emma were separated, if not divorced. By 1917, both Emma and Lillian were living in Seattle, Washington. (On May 29, 1917, Lillian married George Adam Foster; on July 10, 1917, Emma married Herman J Hansen. Both of these marriages occurred in Seattle.)

Thomas died of pulmonary tuberculosis on May 29, 1922. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

After Emma’s marriage to Herman Hansen in 1917, she continued to live in Washington State. She died in Seattle on April 29, 1937.

Lillian Frances Heaslip

Thomas’s and Emma’s daughter was Lillian Frances Heaslip (sometimes called “Lilly”). She was born in 1895, either in Manitoba or in Minnesota.

On May 29, 1917, in Seattle, Washington, Lillian married George Adam Foster. He died in December 1963 in Phoenix, Arizona.

It appears that Lillian died in Phoenix in 1974.
