“Emil L Rane” appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1917, with an address at 1224 Denman Street.

His name was actually Emile (or Emil) Louis Rene. He was born on April 14, 1874, in Montreal, Quebec. His father was Fabien Rene. His mother was Celina St Aubin.

By 1901, Emile was married to Nellie Olympe Bilansky.

Nellie was born in on July 13, 1877, in Saint-Basile, Quebec. Her father was Benjamin Ramsey Bilansky, who was born in Minnesota in 1850. It appears that Benjamin’s father was Stanislaus Bilansky, and that his mother, Ellen, was Stanislaus Bilansky’s second wife. After Ellen left Stanislaus in 1856, he married Mary Ann Evards Wright (often called “Ann”). Stanislaus later died under suspicious circumstances. Ann was convicted of murder and became the only woman executed in Minnesota.

Nellie’s mother was Marie Anne Lynch.

By 1916, Emile was a rancher, living at 456 East Hastings Street in Vancouver.

The only other Vancouver directory listing for Emile was in 1921. He was living at 836 Seymour Street.

It appears that Emile and Nellie moved to California about 1922, where they settled in the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles.

In 1930 they were living at 346½ Indiana Avenue in Venice Beach. Emil was a commercial diver.

In 1939 Emile was salvaging a sunken dredge in the Fraser River, near Lytton, British Columbia. He appears to have suffocated, although his equipment was working correctly.

Emile was buried in Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California.

In 1943, Nellie became a naturalized United States citizen. She was still living at 346½ Indiana Avenue in Venice, California.

Nellie continued to live in California until the mid-1960s. She died in Los Angeles on March 15, 1967. She was buried in Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood.

Emile and Nellie had a daughter.

Eveline Helen Rene

Eveline Helen Rene was born in Canada (possibly in Quebec) on October 25, 1901.

On May 8, 1922, in Los Angeles, California, she married Rodolphe Lord, who was a machinist. He was born in Canada about 1886. His father was Joseph Lord. His mother was Odile Beudoin. This marriage ended in divorce. Rodolphe and Eveline had a son, Leonard Richard Lord, who was born in California on June 20, 1928.

On March 12, 1936, Eveline married Fred George Lane, who was an electric railway motorman. He was born in Paulding, Georgia, on December 1, 1898. His father was John Lane. His mother was Nana Colbert. Fred had been married before, but he was divorced.

Eveline died in Los Angeles County, California, on January 3, 1988.

Fred died in Orange County, California, on March 17, 1990.

“Bilansky’s second wife, Ellen, left him in 1856 after nine years of marriage. The couple had four children. The three surviving—Benjamin, Rinaldo, and Kate, ages 10, 8, and 6 in 1860—remained with Bilansky after the divorce.

Despite his unpleasant demeanor, Bilansky married for the third time in September 1858. Mary Ann Evards Wright had moved to Minnesota from Pleasant Hill, Illinois, in April 1858 at the request of her nephew John Walker, who was ill with typhoid fever. (She and her husband had lived in Fayetteville, North Carolina, for several years before he was killed in a railroad accident.) Wright . . . went by her middle name, Ann . . .”
