Helliwell, Ernest Frank (1879-1945)

Ernest Frank Helliwell was the manager of the Canadian E.T. Syndicate, a business that made charcoal. Later he was an executive with the B.C. Telephone Company. He lived at 1814 Georgia Street in 1913.

Ernest Frank Helliwell was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 4, 1879. His father was Frank Helliwell (1838-1912). His mother was Lone de la Porte Fuller (1847-1837).

Ernest was living with his family in Toronto from 1881 to 1901.

For a time he was a sawmill foreman in Minnesota.

He arrived in Vancouver in 1907, and began working with Pacific Coast Lumber Mills. In 1908 he was living at 1770 Georgia Street.

By 1911, he was the manager of the Pacific Coast Lumber Mills. He was living at 1076 Robson Street.

In 1913, he was at 1814 Georgia Street.

On October 29, 1913, in Vancouver, Ernest married Nora Geraldine Thomson. She was born in Vancouver on June 26, 1889. Her father was Melville Patrick Thomson (1860-1944), who was a stationer and book seller. Nora’s mother was Marcella Fitzgerald (1860-1902).

In 1914, Ernest and Nora appeared in the Vancouver Social Register and Club Directory. They were living in number 12, Stanley Court, at 920 Bidwell Street.

By 1921, Ernest was the commercial superintendent of the B.C. Telephone Company. From 1921 to 1927, he and Nora were living at 1774 Barclay Street.

In 1928, they moved to 5041 Marguerite Avenue.

Nora died in Vancouver on August 8, 1931. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On September 27, 1933, in Vancouver, Ernest married Kathleen Shields Perrin, who was the health supervisor for the B.C. Telephone Company. Kathleen was born on January 21, 1894, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Her father was William Perrin (1846-1906), who had been a British soldier in the Wolseley Expedition and a sergeant in the North West Mounted Police. Kathleen’s mother was Sarah Lytle.

Ernest belonged to the Rotary Club, the Board of Trade, Canadian Club, and the Terminal City Club. He served as president of the Vancouver Preventorium, a facility for patients who had tuberculosis infections, but who did not have an active form of the disease.

Ernest died in Vancouver on August 14, 1945. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Kathleen died in Vancouver on May 17, 1980.

 

Ernest had a son.

 

Donald T. Helliwell

Donald T. Helliwell was living at home in 1945. He later studied commerce at the University of British Columbia.

Mr. Frank Helliwell, who died suddenly at Edmonton, Alta., from blood poisoning, was just returning tto his home here. Mr. Helliwell had completed a month’s visit with members of his family in the West, when he was suddenly stricken.

Deceased was seventy-three years of age, was born beside the Don, and lived in Toronto all his life. He was the only surviving son of the late William Helliwell of Highland Creek.

For many years he was connected with the Elias Rogers Coal Company of this city.

The remains will be brought to Toronto for interment. Mrs. Helliwell of Brunswick avenue, his widow, and two married daughters and a son, in the Northwest, survive. The children are: Mrs. John F. Helliwell, of Vancouver, Mrs. R.W. Cantley of Edmonton, and Mr. Ernest Helliwell of Edmonton.”

“Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Center & Hanna Chapel for Ernest Frank Helliwell, retired superintendent of the commercial department of the B.C. Telephone Co. He died Tuesday.

Mr. Helliwell, once foreman of a sawmill in the Minnesota woods, arrived in Vancouver January 15, 1907, joined the Pacific Coast Lumber Mills as assistant superintendent and then managed the company. Later he went into the business of manufacturing turpentine.

He joined the B.C. Telephone Co. September 1, 1913, as assistant secretary-treasurer. He became general commercial superintendent in 1919.

Active in Clubs

In 1913, he married Miss Nora Geraldine Thomson, who died in 1931, and in 1933, he married Miss Kathleen S. Perrin, who was the company’s health supervisor.

Mr. Helliwell was a member of the Rotary Club, the Board of Trade, Canadian Club, Terminal City Club, and president of the Vancouver Preventorium.

Surviving are Mrs. Helliwell; a son, Donald T., at home.

Rev. N. D. B. Larmonth will officiate at the services, and burial will be at the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery.”

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Friday in Center and Hanna Chapel for Ernest Frank Helliwell, 66, of 5041 Marguerite, for 30 years an executive of the B.C. Telephone Co. Mr. Helliwell died Tuesday.

Mr. Helliwell came to Vancouver in 1907 and in 1913 joined the B.C. Telephone Co. as assistant secretary-treasurer. In 1919 he assumed the position he held at his death, general commercial superintendent.

Before joining the B.C. Telephone Co. he was assistant superintendent, secretary and finally manager of the old Pacific Coast Mills.

Active for many years in the work of the Vancouver Preventorium, he was elected vice-president and chairman and chairman of the finance committee when it was started in 1931 and held that post until he was elected president of the Preventorium in 1942.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Donald T., at home, and one sister, Mrs. J.F. Helliwell, Vancouver.”
