Family Background

Albert Thomas Hutchings was born in Dunmore, Waterford, Ireland, on January 12, 1882. His parents were Henry Hutchings (c. 1842-1934) and Martha Ticehurst (c. 1844-1925).

To Vancouver

By 1906 Albert had settled in Vancouver.

Marriage to Violet Harris

On February 26, 1906, in New Westminster, British Columbia, he married Violet Agnes Harris. She was born in Austin, Manitoba, on December 22, 1884. Her parents were Frank Alfred Harris (1862-1949) and Eliza Jane Rowden (1860-1938).

Vancouver Residences

Albert and Violet first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. They were living at 1869 Alberni Street; Albert was working as a baker.

According to the Vancouver directories, Albert lived at the following addresses.

1907 to 1909 1869 Georgia Street
1910 1025 Melville Street
1911 Stanley Park (Water Works cottage) (with Frank Harris)
1912 to 1917 Not listed under Vancouver names

In 1911, Albert and Violet were living in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, along with Violet’s parents. Violet’s father, Frank, was the caretaker of the water works facility in the park.

To Seattle

By the time of the United States draft registration in 1917 and 1918, Albert had moved to Seattle, Washington, where he was working as a baker. Violet and her daughter, Thelma, moved to Seattle shortly afterward.

The family was still in Seattle in 1920, although the United States census recorded their surname as “Thomas” rather than “Hutchings.”

In 1925, Albert applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

(It appears that this petition did not lead to his naturalization, since in 1949 he filed a new petition that was successful.)

In 1930 the Hutchings were in Seattle. Albert was a baker in a grocery store.

They were still in the Seattle directory in 1937, along with their daughter, Thelma.

Brown Derby, Wikipedia article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Derby: “Los Feliz Brown Derby: The building that formerly housed the Los Feliz Brown Derby at 4500 Los Feliz Boulevard is the only remaining structure in the former chain that is still in operation as a restaurant. Film mogul Cecil B. De Mille, a part owner of the Wilshire Blvd. restaurant, bought the building, a former chicken restaurant named Willard’s, and converted it into a Brown Derby in 1940. It uniquely combined a formal restaurant with a dramatic domed ceiling with a more casual drive-in cafe outside.”
