Ferguson, Munroe (1860-1928)

Munroe Ferguson was a farmer, mill hand, and labourer. He lived at 1889 Pendrell Street and at 1862 Beach Avenue in 1904; and at 1917 Pendrell Street in 1905. (His first name appears either as “Munro” or “Munroe.”)

He was born on October 16, 1860, in Bathhurst, New Brunswick. His father was John Ferguson (1813-1888), a merchant who was member of the Legislative Council of New Brunswick from 1864 to 1867, and federal senator from 1867 to 1888. Munro’s mother was Mary Munro (1823-1918).

By 1881, Munroe was working as a mill-man in New Westminster, British Columbia.

On June 7, 1887, probably in Mount Lehman, British Columbia, he married Annie Elizabeth Merryfield. She was born on December 15, 1869 (some sources say 1867), in Nevada City, California. Her father was James Merryfield (1835-1932). Her mother was Sarah Prout (sometimes spelled “Proud”) (1841-1912). (Sometimes the Merryfield name appears as “Maryfield.”)

In 1891, Munroe and Annie were living in the New Westminster district. Munro was a farmer.

By 1898, Munroe was working as a carpenter in the Mount Lehman area. He was also a mill hand at the Royal City Planing Mills. He was living at number 4, 698 Robson Street in Vancouver.

In 1901 and 1902, he was still an employee of Royal City Planing Mills. He was living in the 1700 block of Beach Avenue in Vancouver. By 1903, the Vancouver directories showed his address as 1781 Beach Avenue.

In 1904, Munroe was at 1862 Beach Avenue. (The street directory showed him at 1889 Pendrell Street, as well).

In 1905, he was at 1917 Pendrell Street.

He did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1905.

In 1907, he applied to the water commissioner in New Westminster for permission to take water from Stewart Creek in Mount Lehman. His application was unsuccessful.

In 1908, Munroe was in the Matsqui municipal district. The New Westminster district directory showed him as a farmer in the Mount Lehman post office region.

He continued to farm in the Mount Lehman area through the 1920s.

Munro died in Matsqui on November 2, 1928. He was buried in Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Annie died in Vancouver on March 9, 1957. She was buried in Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford.

Victor Hedley Ferguson

Victor Hedley Ferguson was born in Vancouver on August 6, 1889.

In his earlier working years, he was a shoemaker. Later he was a steel worker in a shipyard.

On December 27, 1919, in Vancouver, he married Mary Madeline Beulah Jenvey. She was born in Collingwood, British Columbia on October 16, 1903. Her father was George Main Jenvey (1863-1935). Her mother was Marie Virginia Stoll (1868-1947).

Victor died in Vancouver on August 4, 1944. He was buried in Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford.

 

Ada Dorris Ferguson

Ada Dorris Ferguson was born on October 20, 1890. She died in Vancouver on November 20, 1890.

 

Marian Munroe Ferguson

Marian Munroe Ferguson was born on November 5, 1891.

By 1920, she was married to Sigmund Carl King (often called “S. Carl King”). He was born in Bremen, Germany, on August 14, 1888. He had arrived in the United States about 1904. In 1920, Sigmund and Marian were living in Portland, Oregon. Sigmund was a candy manufacturer.

Sigmund died in Portland on June 24, 1965. Marian died in Portland on July 30, 1979.

 

Clarence Gilmore Ferguson

Clarence Gilmore Ferguson was born at Mount Lehman, British Columbia on May 24, 1893.

He worked as a baker. During the First World War, he was drafted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

He later worked as a gardener.

He did not marry. He died in Matsqui, British Columbia. He was buried in Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford.

 

Gordon Merryfield Ferguson

Gordon Merryfield Ferguson was born in Vancouver on June 2, 1895. He worked as a farmer and logger.

On April 19, 1917, in Vancouver, Gordon married Alice Hardenbrook Cronin, who was a widow. She was born on April 21, 1887, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Her father was Charles Young. Her mother was Blanche Peck.

On November 14, 1940, he died after a tree fell on him. He was buried in Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford.

Alice died in Abbotsford on November 30, 1967. She was buried in Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford.

 

John Francis Ferguson

John Francis Ferguson was born in Vancouver on March 10, 1897.

He was a farmer.

During the First World War, he was drafted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He had not registered with the military forces, and he was arrested on August 18, 1916.

He never married.

He died in Abbotsford on February 19, 1938. He was buried in Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford.

 

Edith Muriel Ferguson

Edith Muriel Ferguson was born in Vancouver on December 20, 1899.

Before her marriage, she worked for the Cascade Laundry and Dry Cleaners Limited in Vancouver.

On September 29, 1926, in Vancouver, Edith married Daniel Donald Ross, who was a barber. He was born in Scotland on May 15, 1897. His father was Walter Ross. His mother was Ellen Urquhart.

Daniel died in Essondale, British Columbia, on July 30, 1952.

Edith’s second marriage was to Ralph Ernest Butler. He was born on August 13, 1894 in Lake Egmont, Nova Scotia.

Edith died in Vancouver on January 4, 1967. She was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Ralph died in 1982. He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Burnaby.

 

Beatrice Enid Ferguson

Beatrice Enid Ferguson was born in Vancouver on December 20, 1899.

On August 6, 1917, in Vancouver, she married James Anes McDonald, who was a carpenter and trucker. He was born on January 30, 1883, in Wheatley River, Prince Edward Island. His father was James McDonald. His mother was Priscilla McKinnon.

James died in Matsqui, British Columbia, on February 8, 1954. He was buried in Mount Lehman Cemetery in Abbotsford.

Beatrice died in Matsqui on April 6, 1957. She was buried in Mount Lehman Cemetery in Abbotsford.

 

James Rankin Ferguson

James Rankin Ferguson was born in New Westminster on February 15, 1904.

He worked in the logging industry.

He married Aina Marie Solmie, who was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on May 10, 1904.

Aina died in Port Alberni, British Columbia, on December 29, 1983. He was buried in Ladysmith Cemetery in Ladysmith, British Columbia.

James died on March 21, 1984, Port Alberni. He was buried in Ladysmith Cemetery in Ladysmith.

 

Anne Elizabeth Ferguson

Anne Elizabeth Ferguson was born in Mission City, British Columbia, on April 7, 1908.

On December 28, 1928, in Whatcom County, Washington State, she married Henry Warner, who was a logger. He was born in Maple Falls, Washington. This marriage ended in divorce.

Anne died in Surrey, British Columbia, on July 3, 1979.

Henry and Anne had a daughter named Dawn Elizabeth Warner. She was born in Somas, Washington State on August 14, 1930. She died in Port Alberni, British Columbia, on June 12, 1936.

Carl King and Marion Ferguson King. Bea attended Franklin High School and the former Multnomah College. During her life she was active in Southwest Hills Garden Club, Multnomah Athletic Club and Portland Opera where she served on the board for both the Opera Guild and Association. Bea was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Bea and her husband of 71 years, Peter, lived in Portland but spent many happy days at their beach house in Manzanita. Bea is survived by her husband, Peter; children, Nancy Hardies, Peter (Marilyn) and Scott (Erin); and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at West Hills Health and Rehab and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Portland Rescue Mission or Salvation Army.”
