Harry Gordon Gray was an insurance agent. He lived at 1995 Beach Avenue from 1914 until about 1923.

Harry Gordon Gray (often called “Gordon”) was born on February 27, 1885, in West Ham, Essex, England. His father was Simeon Gray (1837-1902), who was a schoolmaster. Gordon’s mother was Betsy Ann Dawson (1841-1911).

Gordon lived with his parents until after 1901.

In 1906, in Barnet, Middlesex, Gordon married Coralie Fannie Brown. She was born on June 29, 1886, in Sydney, Australia. Her father was Robert Summers Fell Brown (1861-1948). Coralie’s mother was Elise, who was born in Thun, Switzerland.

For a time, Gordon was in a partnership with Robert Summers Fell Brown; the firm was called “Summers, Brown and Co.” It carried on business as manufacturing stationers and import merchants, with an address at 40 Whitecross Street in London. (Among other things, Summers, Brown and Co. published a series of postcards featuring well-known cricket players.) The partners dissolved the firm on June 30, 1911.

Gordon Gray appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1914. He was an employee of Moore Printing Company, and he was living at 1995 Beach Avenue.

By 1915, Gordon had become an insurance agent for R.V. Winch and Company. He remained in the insurance business for the rest of his career.

The family remained at 1995 Beach Avenue until the early 1920s. Gordon’s daughter, Beryl, who later became a well-known fiction writer, remembered her early days in Vancouver:

My childhood was one of delightful freedom near one of the Vancouver beaches, and in the summer I barely knew what it was to wear shoes or stockings. I managed to fall into the sea on an average of once a day, and thought nothing of dragging small boys down the street by their hair. Although I like to write of family life, I do not belong to a large family – just my parents, my young sister, and myself. I am in business, so that writing is still confined to spare time.” (Editorial by Byrne Hope Sanders, Chatelaine Mar. 1932, p. 2) [Magazines, Travel and Middlebrow Culture in Canada 1925-1960; Editorial Commentary; http://www.middlebrowcanada.org/Authors/BerylGray.aspx]

The family later lived in West Vancouver, British Columbia.

Gordon died in West Vancouver on August 10, 1961.

Coralie died in West Vancouver on October 21, 1986.

Gordon and Coralie had two daughters.

Inezlie Beryl Gray

Inezlie Beryl Gray (often known as “Beryl” and perhaps sometime as “Nina”) was born in England on December 6, 1906.

She became a fiction writer, and had several stories published in Canadian magazines, including Chatelaine, Maclean’s and Canadian Home Journal.

It appears that she did not marry

She died in West Vancouver on April 14, 1950.

Betty Sybil Gray

Betty Sybil Gray (sometimes called “Sybil Betty Gray”) was born in Vancouver on July 17, 1919.

She worked as an office clerk.

She married William John Metcalfe.

She died in North Vancouver on December 14, 1993.
