Dee Clifford Pennington was a bookkeeper and clerk for the railroad contracting company of Foley, Welch and Stewart. He was also the chief clerk for railroad contractor Patrick Welch (1859-1929).

He often went by the name of D.C. Pennington. He lived at 2057 Pendrell Street in 1917.

Dee Clifford Pennington was born in on May 23, 1886, in Clinton County, Michigan. (For several years, the family lived in the village of Eagle, northwest of Lansing.) His father was Gilbert Rawson Pennington (1856-1933). His mother was Edith Lovilla Eddy (1858-1922).

In 1900 the Pennington family was still living in Eagle Village. By 1910 they were in Spokane, Washington. Dee was working as a salesman in a store.

On October 8, 1913, in Spokane, Dee married Elvia Coral Gullidge. She was born in Illinois on December 13, 1886. Her father was James Gullidge (1853-1939). Her mother was Mary Elizabeth Clark (1856-1938).

Dee first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1914. He lived at the following addresses.

While Dee was in Vancouver, he worked as a bookkeeper for Foley Stewart and Welch, and as a clerk for Patrick Welch. He was also associated with two other companies: the United Columbia Investment Company Limited and the Pacific Great Eastern Equipment Company Limited.

By 1918, Dee and Elvia were living in Detroit, Michigan. Dee was an executive assistant for the J.L. Hudson Company, which was a large department store on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.

By 1928 Dee was assistant manager of J.L. Hudson, as well as the vice-president of the Fairbairn Hotel Company.

Dee continued to work at J.L. Hudson for the rest of his career. In the 1940s he was the secretary and assistant to the president.

In 1942, Dee and Elvia were living at 470 West Grixdale Avenue in Detroit. The house was built in 1937, in a subdivision of homes that went up in the 1920s and 1930s. The house was still there in 2016, somewhat altered and updated.

Dee retired in 1956. He and Elvia continued to live in Detroit through the 1950s and 1960s.

Dee died in Detroit on July 14, 1971. He was buried in the North Eagle Cemetery in Eagle, Michigan.

Elvia died in Harper Woods, near Detroit, on February 22, 1979. She was buried in the North Eagle Cemetery in Eagle, Michigan.

It appears that Dee and Elvia did not have any children.

“Former Hudson’s Official Dies,” Detroit Free Press, July 15, 1971, page 16; “Services for Dee C. Pennington, 85, retired secretary and director of the J. L. Hudson Go., will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday from the Wm. R. Hamilton Co. Chapel, 3975 Cass. Mr. Pennington died Wednesday at Harper Hospital. He was a Hudson’s employe for 38 years and helped chart many of the company’s philanthropic activities. For much of his time at Hudson’s he acted as a special adviser to Oscar Webber, one of the four brothers who guided Hudson’s through the first half of this century. Mr. Pennington joined the firm in 1918 as an assistant to Webber. He was later named assistant secretary-treasurer and became secretary and a director in 1948. He retired in 1956. Mr. Pennington was instrumental in the development of the Hudson-Webber Foundation and the Hudson’s Employe Consultation Center, which is supported in large part by funds from the foundation. He also inaugurated the first retirement plan for Hudson’s employes. Survivors include his wife, Elvia, and a sister, Mrs. Warner Green of Grand Ledge. Burial will be in North Eagle (Mich.) cemetery.”

Jan 2-”Pat” Welch, aged seventy, member of the  firm of Stewart & Welch, railroad builders, died today at Coronado, Cal., a telegram to relatives here tonight said. Mr. Welch, who had gone to California for his health last Summer, had been ill for nearly four years. Associated with Major-General John Stewart, of Vancouver. B.C., Mr. Welch had a part in the construction of many railroads in the Northwest, and with General Stewart held many contracts in the United States. Canada. Great Britain and Africa.”
