Lauchlin Gilchrist was born in Woodville, Ontario, on May 5, 1854. His father was William Gilchrist (1818-1861). His mother was Margaret Campbell (1926-1856).

On August 17, 1887, in Woodville, Lauchlin married Margaret Anne Maggie Gilchrist. She was born in Woodville on January 7, 1860. Her father was John Calder Gilchrist (1832-1913). Her mother was Ann Hunter Campbell (1833-1905).

Lauchlin was a teacher and principal of the school in Woodville until 1899, when he took over a cattle ranch near Bolsover, Ontario, but by 1901 he and his family were again living in Woodville.

About 1903 the family moved to Livermore, California, where Lauchlin owned a vineyard.

In November 1905, the family left California, planning to begin farming in the Canadian prairies. They stopped in Vancouver, where Lauchlin’s cousin, Roderick Campbell (senior), was a real estate broker with Campbell and MacGregor.

In 1907, Lauchlin was a member of J.M. MacGregor and Company.

By 1910, Lauchlin was a clerk in the City of Vancouver’s assessment office. From 1922 to 1933 he was the chief clerk in the assessment office. He retired in 1933.

Lauchlin died in Vancouver on October 29, 1941. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Maggie died in Vancouver on July 21, 1944. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Lauchlin and Maggie had the following children.

 

William Hunter Gilchrist

William Hunter Gilchrist was born in Woodville, Ontario, on June 24, 1889. In 1891, 1901 and 1911, he was living with his parents.

About 1916, he moved to live in California.

In 1917, he registered with the United States military draft system. He was living at 1800 Third Avenue in San Diego, California. He was employed as a jeweler at the Ernsting Company in San Diego.

By 1917, William had married Maude Wilder Illingsworth. She was born in Wappelo, in Louisa County, Iowa, on March 23, 1894. Her parents were Joseph William Illingsworth (1853-1927) and Clara Lavinia Young (1856-1926).

In 1920, William and Maude were in South Pasadena, California. William was a jewelry salesman.

In 1930 and 1940, William and Maude were in Santa Barbara, California. William was the proprietor of a jewelry store. By about 1936, the jewelry store was at 1311 State Street in Santa Barbara.

In 1942, William registered with the United States military draft. He and Maude were living at 212 Cañon Drive in Santa Barbara.

Maude died in Santa Barbara on October 21, 1964. She was buried in Santa Barbara Cemetery.

It appears that William married Marian Ethel Johnstone (née Hopkins) in Santa Barbara on February 2, 1967.

William died in Santa Barbara on November 27, 1968. He was buried in Santa Barbara Cemetery.

Marian died in Santa Barbara on April 6, 1987.

 

John Duncan Gilchrist

John Duncan Gilchrist was born in Woodville, Ontario, on June 4, 1892. In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

In 1911 he was a clerk with the meat packing company of Swift Canadian Limited.

In September 1915 he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. A gas shell wounded him, and he was evacuated to England to recuperate. He later continued to serve until he was discharged in 1919.

On August 29, 1919, in Vancouver, John married Anna Maria Elizabeth Lanter, who was a widow. She was born in Leytonstone, Essex, England, on August 27, 1890. Her father was James McKinney. Her mother was Emma Daltrey.

In 1921, John and Anna were living in Vancouver. John was the manager of “Janitor Supply House Ltd.”

John was later a salesman for the Dustbane Company.

Anna died in Vancouver on June 6, 1947. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

John died in Vancouver on September 26, 1981.

 

Neil Campbell Gilchrist

Neil Campbell Gilchrist was born in Woodville, Ontario, on June 11, 1894.

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

He became a teacher and school principal in Armstrong, British Columbia. In 1917, he was drafted to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He trained on heavy artillery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but he never served overseas.

After the war he studied at the Los Angeles Medical School of Optometry and Ophthalmology, and later became an optometrist.

On September 8, 1927, in Vancouver, Neil married Elsie Appleby Clark. She was born in Durham, Ontario, on September 27, 1903. Her father was John Clark. Her mother was Ellen Elizabeth Ledingham.

Neil died in Vancouver on March 28, 1975.

Elsie died in West Vancouver on December 2, 1983.

 

Anna Margaret Gilchrist

Anna Margaret Gilchrist was born in Woodville, Ontario, on November 10, 1896.

She lived with her parents in 1901 and 1911.

On Ocober 6, 1920, in Vancouver, she married Colin William Fraser. He was born on June 26, 1892, in Abbotsford, British Columbia. His father was Donald Fraser. His mother was Hannah Isabella Kelly.

Ann died in Nelson, British Columbia, on January 2, 1954.

Colin died in Castlegar, British Columbia, on September 21, 1966.

 

Lachlan Gordon Gilchrist

Lachlan Gordon Gilchrist was born in Woodville, Ontario, on October 10, 1898.

He died in Woodville on October 18, 1902.

“Lauchlin Gilchrist, 101 East Seventh, retired chief clerk of the city assessment office, died Wednesday, aged 87.

Mr. Gilchrist was born near Woodville, Ont., in 1854, and for 25 years was principal of Woodville Public School. In 1887 he married Margaret Ann Gilchrist. In 1902 he went to California, where he had a vineyard, until coming to Vancouver in 1905.

He went into the real estate business with Rod Campbell until 1911, when he joined the staff of the assessment office at the City Hall. When he retired in 1933 he was chief clerk.

Mr. Gilchrist was an active member of the I.O.O.F. for more than 50 years, and was an active member of St. John’s United Church for more than 30 years.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, William H. of Santa Barbara, John D. and Neil C. of Vancouver; one daughter, Mrs. Colin W. Fraser of Trail, and 10 grandchildren.”
