Graburn, Nelson (1864-1942)

Nelson Graburn was an electrical engineer who lived at 1012 Denman Street in 1912.

Nelson Graburn was born on March 17, 1864, in Ottawa, Ontario. His father was Marmaduke Graburn (1829-1881), who was working for the federal Marine and Fisheries Department when he died on board the government steamer “Foxhound,” near Anticosti Island, on June 27, 1881.

Nelson Graburn was married to Agnes Jamieson Shaw. Agnes was born on February 24, 1860, in Quebec. Agnes’s father was David Shaw; her mother was Catherine Rhynar.

Nelson died in Vancouver on March 3, 1942. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Agnes died in Vancouver on February 4, 1948. She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Nelson and Agnes had two children.

Theresa Bromehead Graburn

Theresa was born on March 1, 1895 in Montreal, Quebec. On November 7, 1915, in Vancouver, she married Godfrey Blacker Astell, a surveyor and civil engineer. He lived at 1890 Comox Street from 1916 to 1918.

Godfrey was born on January 9, 1883, in Richmond, Virginia. His father was William Wynyard Astell (1856-1934); his mother was Rosa Murray Blacker (1860-1902). Godfrey arrived in Vancouver about 1911. He worked as building contractor for a short time. By 1912, he was working as a civil engineer for H. Sydney Hancock, who operated a consulting engineering firm in Vancouver.

Godfrey and Theresa had no children.

Godfrey died on March 12, 1967, in Vancouver. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Theresa died on November 22, 1969, in Vancouver. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Marmaduke Jamieson Graburn

Marmaduke Jamieson Graburn was born on December 27, 1896, in Montreal, Quebec. In 1917, he was living in Vancouver with his family, and working as a machinist, when he was drafted to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War. In 1931, he was working an electrician, and living with his parents at No. 114, 1209 Jervis Street in Vancouver. By 1940, he was working as a helper for the BC Electric Railway Company in Stave Falls, British Columbia. In 1948, “Marmaduke J. Grayburn” was a plant operator at the BC Electric Railway’s power station at Lake Buntzen, British Columbia.

On June 4, 1935, in Vancouver, Marmaduke was married to Helen Jane Taylor. He died on January 1, 1965. He was buried at the Maple Ridge Cemetery in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.
