Broadwell, Bertha Eleanor (1884-1980)

Bertha Eleanor Broadwell was at 994 Denman Street in the 1911 Canada census. However, she did not appear in the Vancouver directories from 1910 to 1912.

She was born on September 18, 1884, in Dundalk, Owen Sound, Ontario. Her father was Edward Lee (1855-1908); her mother was Martha Pollard (about 1863-1895). The Lee family came from Ontario to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, in the mid-1880s.

On July 28, 1903, in Victoria, British Columbia, Bertha married Joel Arthur Broadwell, who was an assistant postmaster at Crofton, on Vancouver Island. He was born on January 23, 1876, in Essex County, Ontario. His parents were Joel (1833-1909) and Mary Amanda Broadwell (1835-1901). The Broadwell family was well-known on Salt Spring Island. In the 1890s, Joel Junior had worked with other Salt Spring Island residents to establish telegraph and telephone lines on the island.

After Joel’s and Bertha’s marriage, they went to live in Crofton. Sometime later, Joel developed pulmonary tuberculosis. He died on December 31, 1909, in Kamloops district, British Columbia, perhaps at the Tranquille Sanatorium, which began operating about 1907. [Tranquille Sanatorium, Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tranquille_Sanatorium; Tranquille Sanatorium fonds, http://www.memorybc.ca/tranquille-sanatorium-fonds;rad.] He was buried at Ganges Provincial Cemetery on Salt Spring Island.

In 1911, Bertha and her family were living briefly at 994 Denman Street.

On August 11, 1913, in Victoria, British Columbia, Bertha married Ernest Edward Farrington, who was a motorman for the B.C. Electric Railway. Ernest was born on October 15, 1887, in Ulverton, Lancashire, England. His father was A. Edward Farrington; his mother was Agnes Sanders. Ernest died of influenza in Victoria on February 21, 1919. He was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

It appears that Bertha never re-married. She died in Victoria on May 27, 1980, at the age of 95.

Joel Broadwell and Bertha had the following children.

Rita Edith Broadwell

Rita Edith Broadwell was born about 1905 in Vancouver. On June 30, 1926, in Victoria, British Columbia, she married Herbert H. Leason. He was born in Victoria on October 10, 1903. His father was Edward E. Leason (1859-1935); his mother was Dora Dunaway (1878-1972).

Herbert was a salesman who later became a floor covering contractor. He died in Victoria on January 12, 1990. Rita was still living at that time.

Joel Edward Broadwell

Joel Edward Broadwell was born on November 7, 1906, in Kamloops, British Columbia. He was a city fireman in Victoria, British Columbia, who later became a lieutenant with the Victoria City Fire Department.

On February 6, 1937, in Victoria, he married Helen Josephine Avis, who was a telephone operator. She was born about 1910 in Perry Siding, British Columbia. Her father was John Avis; her mother was Margaret Hudson. This marriage ended in divorce in Victoria on May 31, 1954.

Joel later married Constance Vivian McLelland. She was born on September 25, 1904, in Fort Steele, British Columbia (although some sources say that she was born in Victoria, British Columbia). Her father was William McLellan; her mother was Isabella Keith.

It appears that Constance had been married before. Her first marriage appears to have been in Washington State on November 4, 1922, to Aleck H. Kersey. This marriage ended in divorce.

On November 11, 1932, Constance married Herbert W. Simmons, who was an insurance agent. He was married about 1897 in England. His father was William E. Simmons; his mother was Clara Foster. This marriage was annulled in Victoria on December 9, 1942. When Herbert died in Victoria on December 8, 1943, he was married to Anna Claire Wachter (1902-1947)

Joel died in Victoria on October 5, 1962.

Constance died on July 3, 1986, in Powell River, British Columbia.

Ernest Farrington and Bertha had the following child.

Eleanor Agnes Farrington

Eleanor Agnes Farrington was born in Victoria, British Columbia on April 18, 1914. She never married. She died in Essondale, British Columbia, on February 28, 1942. She was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.
