James Jeffrey was an accountant and the secretary of the Vancouver, Western and Yukon Railway. He lived at 1856 Barclay Street in 1908.

 

Early Life

James Jeffrey was born in Dundee, Scotland on August 30, 1866. His parents were James Jeffrey and Ann Lawson Fettes.

James arrived in Canada about 1888.

In 1901, he was in the Kootenay region of British Columbia. He was working as an accountant.

James first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1904. He was rooming at 537 West Hastings Street, and he was the secretary of the Vancouver, Western and Yukon Railway.

From 1904 to 1940, he was at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Marriage to Maggie Sherborne

On January 21, 1908, at Merry Island, near the Sechelt Peninsula, James married Margaret (“Maggie”) Alice Maude Sherborne. The wedding was at the home of William Thomas Franklin (1868-1955) and his wife, Mary Ann Clachar (1865-1941). Will Franklin was the lighthouse keeper on Merry Island from about 1904 to 1932.

Maggie was born in England on March 5, 1875. (Some sources say she was born in Bristol, but most others agree that she was born in Paulton, Somerset.) Her parents were Henry Sherborne (1840-1918) and Eulalia Susan Sherborne (1838-1889).

James and Maggie in Vancouver

After their marriage, James and Maggie lived in Vancouver.

For several years, James was with the Vancouver, Victoria and Yukon Railway Company and its associated businesses.

His relationship with the railway company ended about 1915. From then on, the Vancouver directories show that he had a series of short employments with various businesses.

1921 secretary-treasurer of Handy Bay Cold Storage and Fish Company
1922 accountant with Rand Tyre Company
1923 accountant with Willis Piano Company
1924 and 1925 Accountant, though not with a specific company
1926 cabinet maker with “R Manufacturing Company”
1927 general accountant

It appears that James and Maggie lived apart for various periods in the 1930s. In 1940, James stayed for a time at the Alcazar Hotel on Dunsmuir Street in Vancouver.

James died in Kaslo, British Columbia on July 9, 1940. He was buried in Nelson Memorial Park in Nelson, British Columbia.

Maggie died in Essondale, British Columbia, on April 22, 1954. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

James and Maggie had the following children.

 

James Henry Jeffrey

James Henry Jeffrey was born in Vancouver on December 8, 1908.

He worked as a bookkeeper. In 1935 he was living with his parents at 3435 West Third Avenue in Vancouver.

On August 29, 1936, in Vancouver, he married Miriam Gwendolyn Murphy. She was born on April 13, 1912 in Killam, Alberta. Her parents were Louis Andrew Lyle Murphy (1879-1927) and Agnes Celia Lemmer (1885-1957).

James later worked as a personnel manager.

Miriam died on June 13, 1988 at Ganges, on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.

Howard Irving Jeffrey

Howard Irving Jeffrey was born in British Columbia in July 1910. (The 1911 Canada census gives his name as William, but this appears to be an anomaly.)

He worked as a clerk for the Imperial Bank of Canada.

On June 4, 1949, in Victoria, British Columbia, he married Orleane Roberta Paterson. She was born in Victoria on November 9, 1921. Her parents were Robert Alexander Paterson (1892-1954) and Marguerite Taylor.

Howard continued to work as a banker for the rest of his career. He and Orleane lived in Victoria, Vancouver, and Jasper, Alberta.

In 1967 they moved to Calgary. In 1972, Howard was a branch manager in Calgary.

She was born November 9, 1921 to Robert and Marguerite Paterson of Victoria, BC. She attended Victoria College in Craigdarroch Castle, completing her teacher training in 1940. Orleane worked for the Imperial Bank of Canada where she met her future husband Howard. They were married on June 4, 1949, raising their family in Victoria and Vancouver in the 1950’s, Jasper in the 1960’s and Calgary since 1967. She also worked for Birks during the 1980’s until her retirement. While always a homemaker, Orleane had a lifetime passion for painting and drawing. After Howard’s retirement, Orleane attended and graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 1981. She loved her summers at their west coast beach home that she and her husband built and delighted in celebrating the achievements of her children and grandchildren. In addition, Orleane was a longtime member of the IODE, Bowfort chapter. Orleane is survived by her children, Gordon (Stella), Catherine, Donald, and Paul (Brenda); special nephew Donald (Monika) Paterson; and grandchildren, Angela (Sean), Ryan (Holly), Alisa, Leanne, Daniel, and Alexis. Orleane was predeceased by her husband Howard in 1985, her sister Frances and brother Robert. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. A Committal Service will be held at a later date in Victoria, BC.
