Edith Isobel Somerset was engaged to Francis Herbert Vaughan, but he was killed in the First World War: Kelowna Daily Courier Newsletter, Four who served and died, http://www.kelownadailycourier.ca/acymailing/archive/view/39-bliss/2419-bliss.html: “Francis Herbert “Frank” Vaughan was born at Oswestry, Shropshire, England, April 15, 1888, son of Lewis Edward and Frances Maria (Gould) Vaughan. The elder Vaughan was “living on own means,” indicating that the family was enjoying a comfortable life. Vaughan attended King’s School (Canterbury, Kent) from 1902 to 1905, and Wye Agricultural College (near Ashford, Kent) from 1905 to 1907. In April 1910, he came to Canada on the Empress of Britain, and by the following year, was farming at Nahun. While there, Vaughan became engaged to Edith Isobel Somerset, whose brother, Bob, was killed, while serving in Belgium, in May 1916. On Dec. 8, 1914, in Victoria, Vaughan enlisted as a trooper in the British Columbia Light Horse, later designated as the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. Details of Vaughan’s death, on March 25, 1916, were reported in the June 15, 1916 edition of The Kelowna Courier and Okanagan Orchardist: “A German grenade landed in the trench and Pte. Frank Vaughan of the 2nd C.M.R. (30th B.C. Horse) to protect his comrades and at the risk of his life, immediately picked up the missile and threw it away. Unfortunately the bomb struck the parapet and fell back into the trench. Without a moment’s hesitation, Vaughan flung himself on the bomb which exploded and killed him. His sacrifice saved many lives. Frank Vaughan was well-known in the Okanagan Valley, and has lived here for the last eight years, owning some property at Nahun.” In that same newspaper, Sergeant H.W. Birkett, of Kelowna, added: “Although he was not in my battalion, I knew him very well and I met two 2nd C.M.R. men the other day on leave in Folkestone, who told me Vaughan was not killed instantly, but died in an hour or two, and when being taken into the clearing station, asked them to attend to men first who were worse than he was, although he was in a dying condition. I am sure his many friends in the Okanagan Valley will be proud to think that they had the privilege of once knowing him.” Vaughan was 27 years old.”

Burchall Somerset, a brother of Lionel Somerset, enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was killed on May 17, 1916.
