William James Lea was born in Toronto, Ontario, on October 21, 1882.

He lived with his parents until the early 1900s.

He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1905.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908; he was living at 2200 Cornwall Street.

Marriage to Helen Mary O’Hare

On June 8, 1910 in Rochester, New York, William married Helen Mary O’Hare. She was born in Rochester on June 2, 1885 (or 1884). Helen’s father was Dr. Thomas Augustus O’Hare (1849-1916), who was a physician in Rochester.

In 1910 and 1911 they were at Glencoe Lodge, which was at 1001 Georgia Street in Vancouver.

In 1911 they were at 2045 Nelson Street, which was the home of Samuel Lyness Howe.

In 1912 they lived in Nelson Court Apartments at 1147 Nelson Street.

In 1913 they built a new house at 3937 Angus Avenue (later called Angus Drive). They lived in this house until the late 1950s.

In the summer of 1919, Helen’s mother was visiting in Vancouver.

In 1919 William became the registrar-treasurer of the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.

For a time the Leas also had a summer cottage on Savary Island.

In 1929 William moved his office to the 15th floor of the new Medical-Dental Building at 925 West Georgia Street. He still had his office in that building until the late 1940s. (The building became known as the “Georgia Medical-Dental Building” in the mid-1950s.)

William died in Vancouver on December 20, 1947.

Helen died in Vancouver on March 22, 1967.

William and Helen had the following children.

Margaret Lea

Margaret Lea was born in Vancouver on April 15, 1911.

She worked as a secretary.

On December 21, 1940, in Vancouver, she married Edwin Jerome (“Jerry”) Worthen, who was a confectionery salesman. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on September 26, 1913. His parents were Walter Jerome Worthen and Marguerite Powell.

In 1947, Jerry and Margaret were living in Queen Charlotte City, British Columbia.

In 1967 they were in Vancouver.

Margaret died in Vancouver on February 16, 1994.

Jerry died in Calgary, Alberta, on February 17, 1999.

Gordon Thomas Lea

Gordon Thomas Lea was born in Vancouver on February 11, 1913.

He worked as a salesman.

In 1940, in Calgary, Alberta, he married Lila Mary Connell. She was born in Stavely, Alberta, on April 29, 1912. Her father was Alexander Connell.

Gordon died in Vancouver on December 21, 1995.

William Harold Lea

William Harold Lea was born in Vancouver on August 28, 1914.

He worked in the insurance business.

He married Audray (or Audrey) Snowdon Dutcher, who worked as a sales clerk. She was born in British Columbia about 1920. Her father was Howard Dutcher.

William and Audray were later divorced.

William died in Delta, British Columbia, on January 1, 1996.

Helen Barbara Lea

Helen Barbara Lea was born in Vancouver about 1916.

On October 31, 1939, in Vancouver, she married John Percival Boyd McCormick, who was a soldier. He was born on January 6, 1916, on Wheatenhurst, Shropshire, England. His parents were Shepherd William McCormick and Mary Jones. This marriage ended in divorce in New Westminster, British Columbia on February 15, 1946. Percival died in Vancouver in 1997.

Helen was also married to Raymond Ramsay and to a Mr. Johnston (or Johnson).

Helen died in Nanaimo, British Columbia on August 21, 1997.

He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1905, passed the examination prescribed by the Council of the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia in June 1908, and was registered as a member of the College on June 15, 1908. On April 21, 1919, he was elected a member of the Council of the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia. In 1919 he was appointed registrar-treasurer of the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, which position he held until the time of his death. In 1929 he was elected a fellow of the International College of Dentists. In 1930 he was appointed the British Columbia representative on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Dental Hygiene Council. In 1932 he received his Certificate from the American Board of Orthodontics as follows: “The Board passed you on your good record in the work performed for orthodontics and dentistry.” (This is an excerpt from a letter dated Sept. 1, 1932, and signed by Albert H. Ketcham, President of the American Board of Orthodontics.) From 1935 to July 1938, he served as president of the Pacific Coast Dental Conference. Previous to this time he was councillor from British Columbia and also vice-president. He was also a member of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists. He died suddenly on Dec. 20, 1947, on the way to his office.”
