John Pursehouse was a cigar maker. The Pursehouse family lived at 1996 Pendrell Street from 1911 to 1914.

 

Early Life

John Pursehouse was born in England in December 1852. (The family sometimes spelled their surname as “Purshouse” or “Pursehouse.”)

 

Marriage to Margaret Nicholson

On August 22, 1875, in Cambois, Northumberland, England, John married Margaret Ann Nicholson. She was born in Tanfield, Durham, England about 1850.

In 1881, Margaret was living in Bedlington, Northumberland, England. It is not clear where John was in 1881.

 

To United States

In October 1884, the Pursehouse family sailed on the S.S. Bothnia from Liverpool, England, to New York City.

In 1890, John applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1900, the Pursehouse family was living in Streator, Illinois. John was a cigar maker.

In 1910, the family was in Denver, Colorado. John was a laborer. His sons were both cigar makers.

 

To Vancouver

From 1911 to 1914, the Pursehouse family was living at 1996 Pendrell Street in Vancouver. Members of the family worked at the following businesses.

1913 Joseph at Diamond Crown Cigar Company (5 – 61 Cordova Street)
1914 Joseph and Richard at Sunset Cigar Factory (1705 Davie Street)

By about 1915, the Pursehouse family moved to California.

Margaret died in California in 1919.

In 1920, John was living in San Francisco, California. In 1922, he died in California, probably in San Francisco.

John and Margaret had the following children.

 

Richard Nicholson Pursehouse

Richard Nicholson Pursehouse was born on October 3, 1875 (or 1876) in Bedlington, Northumberland, England.

He worked as a cigar maker for most of his life.

He never married.

He died in San Francisco, California, on March 11, 1941.

 

Joseph Pursehouse

Joseph Pursehouse was born on February 10, 1878, in Morpeth District, Northumberland.

He worked as a cigar maker for most of his life.

He never married.

He died in California in 1939. He was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo, California.

 

Mary Ann Pursehouse

Mary Ann Pursehouse was born on Februrary 24, 1881, in Morpeth District, Northumberland.

On June 3, 1906, in Denver, Colorado, she married William Beck.

William Beck died in San Francisco on May 4, 1949. He was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo, California.

Mary died in San Francisco, California, on April 25, 1956. She was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma.
