Springer, Frank Benjamin (1879-1911)

Frank Benjamin Springer was the district manager of Imperial Life Assurance Company. He lived at 786 Gilford Street from 1906 to 1908.

Frank Benjamin Springer was born on January 28, 1879, in Moodyville (later North Vancouver), British Columbia. His father was Benjamin Springer (1841-1898), who was a sawmill manager and a prominent Vancouver citizen. Frank’s mother was Frances Mary Nias (1853-1905).

Frank went to the Moodyville School, the East End School in Vancouver, the private school of Charles Hill-Tout, and Victoria High School in Vancouver.

He later worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and then became a manager for Imperial Life Assurance Company, Monarch Life Insurance Company and Eagle Insurance Company.

He was also interested in horse racing.

On August 5, 1908, in Vancouver, Frank married Lucia Louise Duchastel de Montrouge (sometimes called “Lou Lou”). She was born in New York City on January 8, 1882. Her father was Baron Leon Duchastel de Montrouge (1848-1929), who was a French diplomat. Her mother was Anita Snyder (1851-1931). Lucia had attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Sault au Recollet in Quebec.

In 1911, Frank and Lucia went to visit Lucia’s parents in Paris, France. While they were in France, Frank developed appendicitis. Shortly after an operation, Frank died in Paris on July 17, 1911. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver on August 25, 1911.

Lucia’s Later Life

On August 30, 1918, in Vancouver, Lucia married Albert Edmond Juchereau St Denis Duchesnay. He was born on November 3, 1885, in Biscotasing, Ontario. His father was Charles-Edmond Juchereau Duchesnay (1854-1901). His mother was Elizabeth Whitnall (1867-after 1929); she was known as Lilly W. Duchesnay, and she lived at 1973 Haro Street from 1906 to 1916.

In 1930 Albert and Lucia were living in Alameda, California. Albert was a real estate salesman.

It appears that Albert and Lucia’s marriage ended. Lucia later lived in France. She died on July 8, 1956, in Orleans, France. She was buried at Lafrancaise, Tarn et Garonne in France.

By 1940, Albert was married to Alma Nancy Bowell, and was living with Alma’s children from Alma’s earlier marriage to Thomas Melbourne Christie (1893-1980).

Albert died in Alameda, California, on January 5, 1944.

Alma died in Contra Costa, California, on October 26, 1975.

“Frank Springer Died in Paris; Well Known Business Man Passed Away Following Operation for Appendicitis,” Vancouver Province, July 18, 1911, page 1:

“Vancouver friends of the family were shocked today to hear of the death in Paris of Mr. Frank B. Springer. No young man in the city was better known nor more respected than he and the news of his death followed so quickly that his friends were unprepared for the news of his end. Early yesterday afternoon Mr. W.A. Bauer, a brother-in-law of Mr. Springer, received a cable from Mr. George E. Mcdonald, announcing that Frank had been taken with appendicitis and would be operated upon. Late in the evening another cable contained the news that he died a short time after the operation.

Mr. Springer, with his wife and child, had been away for several months travelling in Europe. Before her marriage about three years ago Mrs. Springer was Mdlle. Lulu Duchastel d’Montrouge, and her parents live in Paris; it was to the latter that the young couple with their baby had lately been paying a visit. Mr. and Mrs. George E. Macdonald have also been in Paris since the Coronation.

Mr. Springer was about 33 years of age and a native son. In the early days his father, the late Mr. Benjamin Springer, was manager of the sawmill at Moodyville. In the days of Vancouver’s beginning the elder Springer was a prominent man. Starting his business life in his early twenties Mr. Frank Springer was singularly successful. For several years he has been provincial manager of the Imperial Life Assurance Company, but he had large outside interests. With Mr. Joseph Martin, M.P., he owned a valuable tract of land in Hastings and within the last couple of months the mounting values of oil stocks which he owned had given him a fortune.

An elder brother, Louis, predeceased frank by about eight years. Two brothers and three sisters survive him. They are Hugh and Robert and Mrs. Bauer, Miss Mabel Springer and Miss Eva Springer. Their mother died several years ago.

Mr. Frank Springer was a big, hearty, good-natured fellow and as generous and open-handed as he was successful in business. His death leaves a gap in the community that will be felt for a long time.”

“Funeral of F.B. Springer; Body Will Reach Her Tonight and Be Buried Friday Morning,” Vancouver Province, August 23, 1911, page 4 [similar notice in classified section on page19.]:

“The body of the late Frank B. Springer, who died suddenly in Paris on July 17, following a two days’ illness and an operation for appendicitis, will arrive in the city this evening at 10:25 o’clock by the Montreal train. Messrs. Greene & Merkley will remove the body to their undertaking parlors, 305 Pender street west, where it will lie in state until Friday Morning, August 25, when it will be conveyed to the residence, 1300 Pendrell street.

From the house the funeral party will proceed to the Church of Our Lady of the Holy rosary, arriving there at 10 o’clock Friday morning, where the funeral services will be held. Interment will take place in Mountain View cemetery.”
