Finlayson, Donald Bain (1861-1947)

Donald Bain Finlayson was an accountant. He lived at 743 Denman Street in 1906.

He was born in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia, on November 25, 1861. His father was Donald Finlayson; his mother was Christina Bain.

He married Margarita (Rita) Montefiore, probably in Australia. Rita was born on March 19, 1881, in Toowong, Brisbane, Australia. Her father was Arthur Montefiore; her mother was Sophia Louise Forbes.

Donald first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1905. He was an accountant at 24 West Cordova Street, which was the location of Fife and Hunter Hardware. He was living at 1900 Barclay Street, which was the home of Henry McDowell, a druggist.

It appears that the rest of the family arrived in Vancouver in 1905, perhaps somewhat later than Donald, since the immigration documents listed Rita as the “lady” of the family, along with her son, Donald (age 11), daughter, Joan (age 6), and son, Colin, age 3).

By 1906, Donald had moved to 743 Denman Street; he was still an accountant at 24 West Cordova Street.

In 1907, the family had moved to 1248 Nelson Street, where they stayed for many years. George was now the secretary of the George Hunter Hardware Company Ltd.

By 1910, he was the secretary-treasurer of Martin, Finlayson and Mather, Ltd, the successors to the George Hunter Hardware Company.

In 1914, Donald and Rita were in the Vancouver Social Directory and Club Register. They were still at 1248 Nelson Street. Rita’s receiving day was the fourth Wednesday of the month.

In November 1918, Donald enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was in his mid-50s by then, and it is unlikely that he saw any combat.

After the war, he remained in Vancouver. He died in Vancouver on April 30, 1947. He was buried in the soldiers’ section at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Rita died in Vancouver on August 25, 1947. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
