To Vancouver

Donald first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1905. He was an accountant at 24 West Cordova Street, which was the location of Fife and Hunter Hardware. He was living at 1900 Barclay Street, which was the home of Henry McDowell, a druggist.

It appears that the rest of the family arrived in Vancouver in 1905, perhaps somewhat later than Donald, since the immigration documents listed Rita as the “lady” of the family, along with her son, Donald (age 11), daughter, Joan (age 6), and son, Colin, (age 3).

By 1906, Donald had moved to 743 Denman Street; he was still an accountant at 24 West Cordova Street.

In 1907, the family had moved to 1248 Nelson Street, where they stayed for many years. Donald was now the secretary of the George Hunter Hardware Company Ltd.

By 1910, Donald was the secretary-treasurer of Martin, Finlayson and Mather, Ltd, the successors to the George Hunter Hardware Company.

In 1914, Donald and Rita were in the Vancouver Social Directory and Club Register. They were still at 1248 Nelson Street. Rita’s receiving day was the fourth Wednesday of each month.

In November 1918, Donald enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was in his mid-50s by then, and he spent his service time in Vancouver and in Victoria, British Columbia. He was discharged from the military forces on May 31, 1920 because he was medically unfit.

Later Life

After the war, Donald remained in Vancouver. He died in Vancouver on April 30, 1947. He was buried in the soldiers’ section at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
