Edward Courtenay Pellew Mayers was a lawyer who lived at 1890 Comox Street from 1919 to 1921.

Edward Courtenay Pellew Mayers was born in Barbados, West Indies, on December 26, 1878. His parents were Edward George Pellew Mayers (1840-1911) and Amina Knight (1847-1879). (Edward George Pellew Mayers served in the British military from 1859 until he was court-martialed in 1883 for embezzlement.)

Edward Courtenay Pellew Mayers went to school at Bradfield College in Berkshire, England. From 1905 to 1909, he was an inspector of foreign labor in Transvaal. He studied law in London, and he was called to the English bar in 1911.

He later travelled to China and South Africa. By 1912, he was in Victoria, British Columbia.

On July 18, 1913, in Vancouver, he married Mary Evelyn Gurrey. She was born in 1884 in Croydon, Surrey. Her parents were Frank Gurrey and Emmeline Mairs.

Edward was associated with the law firm of Bodwell and Lawson in Victoria until 1917.

Edward first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1918. He was living at 1120 West Pender Street.

Edward had a successful law practice in Vancouver. He specialized in constitutional and commercial law. He represented clients in many important cases, including appeals that went to the Privy Council in Great Britain, which was the highest court for Canadian cases at that time.

He also studied marine law, and he produced a book called “Admiralty Law and Practice.” He also published a digest of British Columbia law reports.

About 1929, Edward retired from law; he and Mary moved to Cadboro Bay, near Victoria. However, in 1931, they returned to Vancouver, and Edward resumed his law practice.

In September 1933, Edward was in poor health, and he was losing his eyesight. On the evening of September 12 he went to his room in the Devonshire Hotel. He died after taking an overdose of the barbiturate drug veronal. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mary lived in Victoria until about 1934.
