Alfred Cyril Hirschfeld was a photographer, newspaper publisher, miner, and a real estate and financial broker. (He normally spelled his surname as “Hirschfeld,” but some sources say “Hirschfield” or “Hirchfeld.”)

According to the Vancouver directories, Alfred lived at 1961 Comox Street in 1910, at 1963 Comox Street in 1911 and 1912, and at number 47, 2046 Beach Avenue in 1913. (He also lived in other parts of Vancouver, outside the West of Denman area.)

Alfred Cyril Hirschfeld was born in London, England, on June 8, 1866. His father was Gustav Hirschfeld, who emigrated from Austria to England and became a merchant. Alfred’s mother was Elizabeth, who was born about 1839 in Manchester, Lancashire.

Alfred went to school in London, England; Brussels; and Paris. He worked in the wholesale silk business in London and Paris. Later he was involved in mining in South Africa. For a time he was in the wholesale cigar business in San Francisco.

Alfred was also involved in mining and other businesses in Atlin.

On June 10, 1902, in Vancouver, Alfred married Marguerite Ethel Miller (sometimes called “Margaret” or “Greta”). She was born on September 17, 1879, in Vancouver (then called “Granville”). Her father was Jonathan Miller (1834-1914). Her mother was Margaret Springer (1837-1906). Marguerite was an accomplished pianist.

After the marriage, Alfred and Marguerite stayed briefly in the Vancouver area. They were back in Atlin by the beginning of July 1902.

Alfred became the president of the Atlin Board of Trade in 1903.

About 1904, Alfred and Marguerite moved from Atlin to Vancouver. They appeared at the following addresses in the Vancouver directories.

On February 24, 1928, Marguerite married Hilton Warburton Philpot, who was a bookkeeper and machinist. He was born on July 20, 1879, in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England. His father was Harvey John Philpot (1833-1913), who was a physician. Hilton’s mother was Caroline Ritchie. (1839-1922). (Two of Hilton’s sisters married residents of the West of Denman area: Henry Hume Morris and Gilbert Hunter Finlay.)

In 1940, Hilton and Marguerite were living in San Francisco, California. In 1942, Hilton was a claims examiner for the Independent Insurance Company of North America.

Hilton registered with the United States military system in April 1942. He became a naturalized United States citizen on May 11, 1942.

Walter Hirschfeld was born in London, England, in June 1865.

He moved to the United States about 1893. He worked as a medical equipment dealer, and he was the manager of “Radam’s Microbe Killer Company” at 1366 Market Street in San Francisco. The “microbe killer” had questionable medical value, but the product made its inventor, William Radam (1844-1902), quite a wealthy man.

Walter Hirschfeld married Lillian Haendel about 1897. She was born in California on January 21, 1877. Walter and Lillian had a son, Harold S. Hirschfeld, who was born in California on December 6, 1897. (It appears that Harold died on November 22, 1978, in Monterey, California.)

At some point Walter and Lillian were divorced, but on November 12, 1900, in Reno, Nevada, they re-married.

Walter’s business was having difficulty, however, and he killed himself with a revolver on December 4, 1900.

On December 24, 1901, in Marin County, California, Lillian married Joseph Charles Meyerstein (born about 1874).

Lillian died on April 15, 1966, in San Francisco. She was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, California.
