Newton Theodore Truell was the provincial manager for the Dominion Life Assurance Company. He lived at 1891 Nelson Street in 1918.

Newton studied at Stanstead Wesleyan College, the Collège de St-Hyacinthe and St. Francis College.

In 1885 he was the head master of the Model School at Portage du Fort, Quebec.

In 1889, he became the principal of St. John’s High School.

On December 27, 1892, Newton married Julia Maude Bissett Futvoye, of St. Johns, Quebec. Her parents were Isaac Booth Futvoye (1832-1897) and Mary Ann Dixon (1837-after 1901).

In 1901, Newton and Maud were living in Argenteuil, Quebec, along with their daughters, Marjorie and Dorothy.

In 1903, Newton became the principal of Sherbrooke City School (sometimes called Sherbrooke Academy).

In 1908 he resigned from Sherbrooke Academy to join the Sun Life Assurance Company in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In 1910, Newton moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, where he became Sun Life’s manager for Saskatchewan.

By 1916, Newton was in Montreal, where he was the manager of Manufacturers Life Insurance Company.

Newton and Maude seem to have stopped living together. In June 1916, the Montreal Gazette had a note referring to Maude’s legal action against Newton. The action may have related to a matrimonial issue or a property matter, but further details are not available.

(In the late 1920s, there was a legal action involving Newton’s daughter, Marjorie. During the proceedings, there were several references to Newton’s wife having died around 1915. These references were not correct.)

 

Arrival in Vancouver

Newton first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1918. He was living at 1891 Nelson Street, and he was the provincial manager for Dominion Life Assurance Company.

His daughter, Marjorie, lived with him.

Move to California

Newton and his daughter, Marjorie, moved to California.

Marjorie sailed from to Victoria, British Columbia, to San Francisco, on the “Dorothy Alexander.”

Marjorie arrived in San Francisco on March 12, 1923.

Newton entered the United States on January 31, 1925. He was travelling to Los Angeles, California. His travel document said that he was married and that he had never been in the United States before.

Newton’s wife, Maude, died in Montreal, Quebec, on July 9, 1945. She was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal.

Newton died in San Diego County, California, on August 15, 1947.

Stanley Valorous Truell

Stanley Valorous Truell was born in late 1893. He died in St. Johns, Quebec on July 7, 1894, at the age of nine months.

Marjorie Edith Truell

Marjorie Edith Truell was born on August 29, 1896, in Lachute, Quebec. (She was sometimes called “Edith Marjory Truell” or “Marjorie Truell.”)

In 1901 she was living with her parents in Argenteuil, Quebec.

In 1911 she was living in a lodging house in Regina, Saskatchewan.

She later went to school at St. Mary’s Academy in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In 1921, she was with her father in Vancouver.

She moved to the United States, arriving in San Francisco, California on March 12, 1923.

From January 15, 1924 to June 15, 1926, Marjorie worked for the Security Trust and Savings Bank. She was preparing to be married to Oskar William Davidson, and she purchased a series of articles by writing worthless cheques. She pleaded guilty to four charges of forgery, and she received a prison sentence of one to 14 years.

She entered San Quentin prison in August 1926. In September 1927, she was paroled.

On February 14, 1928, in Orange County, California, she married Oskar Davidson. He was born in Peterborough, Ontario on October 28, 1892. His parents were Hugh Davidson and Jane Armstrong.

In December 1928, Marjorie received a final discharge from the prison system. In July 1929 she was discharged from probation.

Because she was not a United States citizen, she was subject to deportation to Canada. Her father and many other citizens, including the mayor of Los Angeles, wrote to the California governor, asking for a pardon. The governor agreed, and on September 16, 1929, he granted a pardon to Marjorie.

In 1940, Marjorie applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

Oskar died in November 1953.

Dorothy Truell

Dorothy Truell was born on September 4, 1899 in Quebec, possibly in Lachute.

In 1901 she was living with her parents in Argenteuil, Quebec.
