Valerian Jacob Straube was a locksmith and gunsmith. He lived at 1835 Pendrell Street from 1904 to 1917. He also had a business address at 1873 Beach Avenue in 1915.

Valerian’s son, Charles Straube, was at 1876 Pendrell Street from 1912 to 1914.

 

Valerian Jacob Straube

Valerian Jacob Straube was born in Germany on April 13, 1855. His parents were Valentine Straube (1825-1903) and Katharina Kruczkowska (or Grzeczkowska) (1831-1918).

It appears that the Straube family arrived in Canada about 1857. They lived in in Waterloo, Ontario; some members of the family later went to Manitoba.

Valerian first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1888. He was living on Abbott Street and working as a gunsmith.

Annie Cecilia Straube was born in Vancouver on December 5, 1887.

On October 18, 1913, in Vancouver, she married Terence Francis (“Frank”) Doyle. He was born on May 29, 1892 in Toronto, Ontario. His parents were James Doyle and Alice Gertrude Wale (or “Whale”).

Annie and Frank lived in Seattle, Washington.

Frank registered with the United States military draft system during both the First and Second World Wars.

Frank died in Seattle on December 2, 1955. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Seattle

 

Valentine Anthony Straube

Valentine Anthony Straube was born in Vancouver on March 25, 1889.

He worked as an accountant and salesman.

On September 14, 1910, in Vancouver, he married Christina Middleton Houghan. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland on April 26 [about 1878]. Her parents were Robert Tait Houghan and Christina Middleton.

In 1912, Valentine obtained a permit to build a house at 3431 West Second Avenue.

Valentine and Christina sometimes lived in Hollyburn, on Vancouver’s North Shore during the summertime.

Christina died in Vancouver on January 16, 1961. She was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver.

Charles Straube

He worked as a shipping clerk and truck driver.

On August 4, 1911, in Seattle, Washington, he married Chloey Lauretta Ruble (often called “Lauretta”). She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on November 27, 1894. Her parents were William Thomas Ruble (1863–1943) and Wealthy Ann Hoover (1869–1950).

From 1912 to 1914, Charles and Lauretta lived at 1876 Pendrell Street.

In 1914, Charles was injured when a runaway horse ran into a car in which he was riding. Although he received serious injuries, he later recovered.

Charles and Lauretta moved to California.

Charles became a naturalized United States citizen. Probably because Lauretta’s marriage to Charles had resulted in her loss of American citizenship, Lauretta also had to apply to become a naturalized United States citizen.

Lauretta died on May 29, 1946 in Alameda County, California.

In the 1940s and 1950s Charles regularly received an award for safe driving.

Julia Monica Straube

Julia Monica Straube was born in Vancouver about July 3, 1894. (Some sources say her middle name was Amelia.)

On November 14, 1914, in Vancouver, she married Wilfred John Doyle, who was a clerk. He was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 6, 1894. His parents were James Doyle and Alice Wale. He was a brother of Terence Francis (“Frank”) Doyle, who married Julia’s sister, Annie.

Wilfred and Julia lived in Seattle, Washington.

Julia died in Seattle on October 23, 1945. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Seattle.

Wilfred died in Seattle on September 12, 1969. He was buried in Holyrood Catholic Cemetery in Shoreline, Washington.
