Norris, William Edward (1861-1910)

William Edward Norris was a broker and commercial agent who lived at 1929 Comox Street in 1902 and 1903.

 

William Edward Norris’s Family Background

William Edward Norris was born in July 1861 in Brierley Hill, west of Birmingham, England. His father was Dr. William Lascelles Norris, who came from a family of physicians, including William Norris (1792-1877).

William Edward Norris’s mother was Mary Garland, who was the daughter of a solicitor from Worcester, England:

William Lascelles Norris died in April 1872. On June 18, 1881, in Tottenham, Mary married William Robert Woodman, who was a medical doctor, freemason, and student of the occult. Doctor Woodman died in London, England, on December 26, 1891. Further information on Mary is not available at this time.

William Edward Norris arrived in Canada about 1884.

By 1893, he was the secretary of the Union Brewery in Nanaimo.

Minna Good and the Good Family

On September 2, 1893, in Nanaimo, William married Minna Cecelia Elizabeth Good. She was born in Colchester, Kent, England, on January 19, 1865. Minna’s father was Henry Berkeley Good (1830-1887), a former British military officer who had served in Canada, India, and New Zealand.

By 1868, Henry Berkeley Good was living in Victoria.

He later became a collector of inland revenue in Victoria.

Minna’s mother was Eliza Lambert (1830-1916). Eliza had married Henry Berkeley Good in India in 1858.

The Good family was well-known on Vancouver Island. Charles Good married Alice, the daughter of Governor James Douglas. (The marriage involved an elopement and marriage ceremony in the United States, followed by a second ceremony in Victoria, in case the United States ceremony was invalid.) The marriage ended unhappily.

Another member of the family, Henry Leslie Good, was a customs house officer. On May 7, 1892, he married Mary Serena Clarke. Further information on this family appears on the page for John Lyster Clark (or Clarke), who lived at 1816 Pendrell Street from 1910 to 1933.)

Henry Berkeley Good died in Victoria on May 10, 1887.

Minna’s mother, Eliza, died in Victoria in 1916.

William and Minna in Nanaimo and Vancouver

After their marriage in 1893, William and Minna lived in Nanaimo until about 1900.

In 1901, William first appeared in the Vancouver directories. He was a commercial merchant at 317 Seymour Street, and his home was at 2731 Westminster Road (later called Main Street).

In 1902 and 1903, the family lived at 1929 Comox Street.

In 1903, William was a traveller for Pither and Leizer, a wholesale liquor business.

By 1904, William was a broker at 613 West Hastings Street. This was the office of Ewen Wainwright Maclean (1863-1923), a real estate, insurance and financial agent who later lived at 1942 Alberni Street in 1919 and 1920.

From 1906 to 1909, William worked as a broker and commercial agent for brewers supplies. He lived at 1432 Pender Street in 1906. Later he was at the corner of Arbutus Street and First Avenue

William died in Vancouver on December 14, 1910.

The Vancouver World had a short obituary:

“W.E. Norris: The death occurred in this city on Wednesday night of W.E. Norris, of 2136 Napier street, Grandview. The deceased was the son of the late Dr. Norris, of Tottenham, England, and leaves a wife and family to mourn his loss.” [Vancouver World, December 16, 1910, page 23, column 1.]

Minna later moved to Victoria, British Columbia. She died in Victoria on April 25, 1952.

 

William and Minna had the following children.

 

John Lascelles Nordaque Norris

John Lascelles Nordaque Norris was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on October 17, 1895.

He worked as a surveyor.

In November 1914, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve in the First World War.

He died in France on August 21, 1917. His name appears on the Vimy Memorial in France.

 

Enid Maitland Lascelles Norris

Enid Maitland Lascelles Norris was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on December 17, 1896.

On July 11, 1925, in Vancouver, Enid married Gordon Rupert Mason, who was a broker. He was born in Barkerville, British Columbia, in March 21, 1883. His father was Joseph Mason, who was a member of the British Columbia Legislature. His mother was Ada Jane Bruce Skinner.

Gordon later worked as an oil broker. He died in Victoria, British Columbia, on February 24, 1953.

No further information is available for Enid at this time.

Gordon and Enid had a son, Derek L. Mason, who went to Victoria College, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Western Ontario.

 

George Darrell Lascelles Norris

George Darrell Lascelles Norris was born in Vancouver on July 23, 1902.

He later moved to the United States. By 1930, he was married to Mildred Bessie (unknown last name). She was born in Kansas about on October 13, 1903. George and Mildred were living in Portland, Oregon.

By 1935, George and Mildred had moved to Seattle, Washington. They were still living in Seattle in 1940.

About 1940, George became a naturalized United States citizen.

George owned a yacht called “Miss Swish.”

It appears that Mildred died in Washington State on in May 1983.

George died in Washington State on October 4, 1993.

 

Eleanor Ann Lascelles Norris

Eleanor Ann Lascelles Norris was born in British Columba about 1909.

She married Howard W. Wilson, and was living in Portland, Oregon in 1952.

No further information is available for Eleanor and Howard at this time.

Good of Nanaimo, was charmingly gowned in a straight-cut frock of peach colored printed georgette with her Leghorn hat becomingly trimmed in the same shades. She carried an exquisite sheaf of peach and rose-colored gladioli, and was attended by her sister, Miss Eleanor Norris, who wore a frock of mauve French voile and cream lace with hat to match and carried a shower bouquet of mauve and pink sweet peas. Later Mr. and Mrs. Mason will reside in Vancouver.”
